SAN ANTONIO (AP) —The red
pharaoh ant, also known as the
“sugar ant,” is spreading anything
but sweetness among homeowners,
who may have to spend $150 to get
rid of the pests.
“It just as if we have a real rash of
them,” said Robert Cawood, presi
dent of Central Pest Control.
The ants can transmit diseases by
carrying bacteria they pick up on
their bodies from filth.
Phil Hamman, an urban entomo
logist with Texas A&M University
extension service, said the increased
number of pharaoh ants could be
caused by crowding and urban de
velopment.
“Perhaps we are seeing the effects
of people living in closer proximity
because of more apartment build
ings and other developments,”
Hamman said.
Wes Light, owner of Lights Out
Pest Eliminators, said he has been
besieged with requests to wipe out
the insects.
The process, however, is not that
simple and could cost between $100
and $150 to rid the ants from a
three-bedroom home.
“Regular insecticide spraying it
self is worse than nothing at all,”
Light said.
Spraying causes the colonies to
break up, resulting in several colo
nies, Light said.

Sunset Today: 5:50 p.m.
Sunrise Wednesday : 7:21 a.m.
Map Discussion: The intense upper low and associated surface front will
continue moving northeastward through the Great Lakes with snow while the
warm front will produce snow, sleet and rain through New England. Another
vigorous low pressure system and cold front will plunge into the Pacific Northwest
tonight and Thursday, with continued advection of cold air into Southeast Texas.
Light snow flurries are possible late this afternoon and tonight from the Hill
Country to Lake Sam Rayburn.
Forecast:
Today, tonight and Thursday. Partly cloudy with a high of 46 today, low of 27
Thursday morning and high of 38 Thursday. Winds will be northerly.
Weather fact Moisture, pressure, temperature and wind, the atmospheric
variables, are interdependent; thus, when a forecast for any one of these is
“busted," it in turn affects the other three. For example, an erroneous cloud cover
forecast for Tuesday caused an erroneous temperature and forecast of a 20
percent chance of rain.
