There have been so many calls from people wanting to help that Karen Robbins of the Texas Depart ment of Human Services decided the baby should be known by more than a generic name. She named the child Natalie Christine, a choice inspired by the season. “It seemed kind of sad to send do nations to ‘Baby Girl,”’ Robbins said. “She didn’t have a very good start. Maybe her luck will change with a strong name.” “Natalie” was left in a trash bin be hind a south Dallas apartment com plex just after birth, her placenta and umbilical cord still attached. Au thorities said the infant survived, ap parently because the trash which covered her helped insulate her from the cold. “Right now she’s just a normal in fant — eating and sleeping,” said Robbins, who was assigned to the ba by’s case. “She appears real healthy.” The Department of Human Serv ices, which was granted temporary custody of Natalie, is expected to place the child with a foster family within a few days. A judge should make a Final decision about t custody on Wednesday. Valencia Gill-Hooper, the b os pL tal’s adoption social worker, said, “It’s just been phenomenal. A lot of people want to adopt this baby.” Authorities, meanwhile, have tried to locate Natalie’s parents, but they say they have little information. Parkland officials said many peo ple are calling the hospital to check on the girl’s condition or to ask what they can do for her. It occurs from objects, especially pointed ones, when the electrical field strength near their surfaces reaches a critical point. Aircraft flying through active electro storms often develop corona discharge from antennas, propellers and the wing structure. It also is seen from the masts of ships at sea. The name St. Elmo’s Fire was given to the phenomenon by early Mediterranean sailors who regarded it as a visit from their patron sairt Elmo. In addition to the prison sentence, Raymond Earl Watts, 37, was as sessed a total of $20,000 in fines. The charges on which he was con victed were based on statements from two boys, ages 13 and 14, that Watts had oral sex with them. “Needless to say, we are happy with the verdict (sentence),” Watts’ attorney, Juan Jose Martinez, said, adding that two years was better than the 40 years the prosecution had recommended. The jury deliberated about two hours Wednesday in deciding Watts’ sentence. He originally faced eight charges, including aggravated sexual assault of a minor, sexual assault of a minor and indecency with a minor, before pleading guilty to two sexual assault charges. Two hours after his sentencing, Watts, a seventh- and eighth-grade English teacher in Brownsville until his suspension last March, was ar raigned on two additional felony charges of sexual assault of a minor, one felony charge of indecency with a minor and a misdemeanor weap ons charge. The sheriff said the three in the new sexual assault and cency charges were friends boy, whose charred body was: Nov. 22 near the Cameron C community of Russelltown. Sheriff Alex Perez said the victim appar ently had been beaten, then set on fire. No one has been charged in the boy’s death, Perez said. Perez said the dead boy lieved to be an acquaintac Watts.
