Santa Claus is coming to
town a little differently this
year. Penny Zent, chairman of
the 1987 Bryan-College
Station Holiday Parade, said a
sky-diving Santa Claus is one
of the main attractions for the
Dec. 6 parade.
The parade, which carries
the theme of “Holiday Miracles
1987, ” will begin at 3 p. m.,
with Santa Claus landing at the
Texas A&M polo field shortly
before its start.
After Santa Claus lands he
will join the Chamber of
Commerce float, which is the
last float in the parade, Mary
Branner from the Convention
and Visitor Bureau said. He will
be the only Santa Claus in the
parade.
“We only have one Santa
Claus so the children will not
get confused, ” Branner said.
The parade will start at the
main entrance to Texas A&M
and continue down Texas
Avenue, disbanding at Villa
Maria Road.
Patty Sears, information
specialist for the Convention
and Visitor Bureau, said
approximately 50.000 people
are expected to line the sides of
Texas Avenue to view this
annual event.
“This is probably one of the
largest projects the Convention
and Visitor Bureau does, ”
Sears said.
Zent said the parade will last
approximately one and a half
hours but its length will depend
on the amount of time it takes
for representatives from the
126 clubs, organizations,
businesses and bands from the
community and surrounding
areas to move down Texas
Avenue.
Each participant will be
judged by a committee of
community leaders before the
parade begins and awards will
be given in 23 categories
ranging from the best band to
the best youth-community
organization represented, she
said.
Sears said the parade is
“definitely not a money maker,
but a community service. ” To
help finance the parade,
different local businesses
donate money and each
entrant pays $10 to participate,
Sears said.
“It takes a lot of people to
make it successful, ” Sears said.
Zent, who has worked with
the parade for nine years, was
not sure how many years this
annual event has occured but
she said it has most likely been
around for over 20 years.
Monique Verse, a senior
industrial distribution major,
was one of the parade viewers
last year and she said she
enjoyed it and will waich the
parade again this year.
“I enjoyed the parade; it
really put me in the spirit of
Christmas, ” Verse said.
The parade will be broadcast
at 8 p.m. on KAMU-TV,
Channel 15. which is Channel
4 for the cable stations.
