On his first two tries, Wayne Fletcher Pratt was turned away from the Texas Department of Correc tions. “This thing’s like making hotel reservations,” said State District Judge Woody Densen, who ex pressed more than just a mild sense of disgust at the way the system was working. “But he’s going to try again . . . I’ve never experienced anything like this.” Pratt was sentenced to two years in prison in an aggravated assault case. He first tried to turn himself in to prison officials Sept. 30, but was told that he couldn’t be helped be cause he didn’t have an appoint ment. Last Friday, he couldn’t get in be cause he arrived too late. His attorney, Hogan Stripling, said, “He’s tried to comply with the judge’s order twice and was turned away. This man has already got nine months credit on a two-year sen tence, so all this is only going to be paper work.” Stripling estimated Pratt would be paroled within a month of entering prison. Prison spokesman Charles Brown said the TDC has changed its policy from open admission to closed ad mission, or one where inmates like Pratt would be scheduled for admis sion through the Harris County Sheriffs Department. Since the prison system averages about 150 inmate admissions per week, future inmates have been asked to first contact county sheriffs offices. “That’s what we prefer, because that’s the normal way it’s done,” Brown said. Pratt’s next opportunity to offer himself to the criminal justice system is Dec. 3, when he once again is scheduled to surrender himself to TDC officials on orders of Judge Densen. Densen expressed little concern that Pratt would try to flee. “He’s been pretty diligent in try ing to report,” Densen said. “Serving time up there is mean ingless anymore, and now you can’t get in,” Densen said. Group tells teachers to boycott meetings DALLAS (AP) — A teachers’ group urged its 2,100 members to boycott night meetings during American Education Week because of a rash of nighttime vandalism and other crime at campuses. In recent parent-teacher confer ences held at night, there were tire slashings, verbal assaults and thefts, said Gene Epperson, president of Classroom Teachers of Dallas. Teacher organizations have been urging Dallas Independent School District administrators to take action against the vandalism since 1982, when the district formed a committee to look at the pi officials said. y’'" But representatives for leaf* organizations said the adminii tion’s reaction has been unsatist tory, and that teachers rem frightened.
