German-style fun in New Braunfels
by Deborah L. West
Beer, ompah music,
sausage, potatoe pancakes,
com-on-the-cob and funnel
cakes can be found this
weekend at the 27th annual
Wurstfest in New Braunfels.
Suzanne Herbelin, executive
secretary of the Wurstfest
Association of New Braunfels,
Inc., says the festival, now in its
second week, features food,
fun and music.
“The festival is a salute to
sausage, ” she says. “The
community celebration of it has
grown every year. ”
More than 60 bands,
including Clover Leaf, High
Toppers, Alpinfest, Seven
Dutchmen and the Bavarian
Village Band are playing at
Wurstfest again this year, in
addition to one special
attraction.
“A volunteer fire
department’s band from
Braunfels, Germany, will play
several times, ” Herbelin says.
The band, called Musikzug Der
Freiwilligen Seuerwehr
Bonbaden, also played at the
festival in 1983.
“Their music is different, ”
Herbelin says. “I think a lot of
students will like it. ”
In fact, there are many
attractions that students can
enjoy, she says.
“We always have a lot of
students that like to dance and
drink beer come to Wurstfest, ”
Herbelin explains.
Along with the performing
bands, Wurstfest also features
several craft booths run by the
local churches. Beer steins,
t-shirts and other souvenirs are
sold at the booths.
The Wurstfest Association is
a non-profit organization. All
profits generated by the
association and 90 percent of
the concessions’ profit from
Wurstfest are tunneled back
into the community, Herbelin
says.
The concessions, run by
other non-profit organizations
like the Rotary Club, the Lions
Club and the German-
American Society, raise money
for special restoration projects,
building projects and landscape
improvements. One of this
year’s big fund raisers is the
Children’s Emergency Shelter,
Herbelin says.
One of the major projects
built by Wurstfest funds should
be familiar to many students.
“The Chute Shoot on the
Comal River is probably the
best example of a project that
was built with Wurstfest
money,” Herbelin says. “I’m
sure more than a few Aggies
have ridden the rapids and
gone down the innertube chute
in warmer weather. ”
The grounds admission at
Wurstfest is $4 and Wursthalle
admission is $2. Children
under 12 get in free.
To get to Wurstfest, take
Highway 21 west to San
Marcos and then take Highway
35 south to New Braunfels.
Signs will lead to Landa Park
and the Wurstfest Grounds.
