TEXAS CITY (AP) — Refinery
workers continued draining toxic
acid from a ruptured storage tank
Sunday, while a neighborhood evac
uation remained in effect, officials
said.
About 3,000 people left their
homes Friday evening after a cloud
of hydrofluoric acid was released
from a storage tank ruptured in a
crane accident at the Marathon Pe
troleum Co. plant.
Police Capt. Jerry Doraty said late
Saturday that many had returned to
their homes, and the area of forced
evacuation had been reduced to
about 20 blocks around the affected
area.
Texas City police officer Ed
Turner said, “Everything is still
blocked up, people are still evac
uated.”
Spokesman Beverly Boase said
during the weekend, about 370 peo
ple sought treatment for breathing
difficulties and skin, and eye irrita
tion at AMI-Danforth Hospital.
Most were considered minor inju
ries.
Of the 109 admitted for treat
ment, only 34 remained Sunday
morning, Boase said. All 34 were in
stable condition, and many were ex
pected to be discharged Sunday.
When the tank was ruptured Fri
day evening, the hydrofluoric acid
inside vaporized, spreading a toxic
cloud.
Marathon Petroleum Co. spokes
man Bill Ryder said emergency
crews shot down some of the mist
with water and worked through the
weekend to drain the remaining
chemicals from the tank. The opera
tions were still going on Sunday,
Ryder said.
“We continued pumping through
the evening and right now we have
shut down because we did lose some
pressure as anticipated,” Ryder said
Sunday morning.
Hydrofluoric acid, strong enough
to etch glass, is used in the refinery
as a catalyst to speed up separation
of hydrocarbons into lighter prod
ucts, such as benzene.
