WATCH FOR BARGAINS IN THE BATTALION!! “Texas is just so dominant at this point,” A&M Swimming Coach Mel Nash said about the Lady Longhorn team. “They’ve been on top pretty comfortably for the last few years. We kind of figure if we get second in the conference, we win. “We think we have a good shot for that this year. You don’t like to look at it that way as a coach, but that’s the step we want to take and then we’ll go after them.” A&M’s women’s team placed third in the SWC in 1986-87, one point be- sophomore breaststroke s» Courtney Searcy and sopk more freestyle and butterfly swim mer Michelle Chow. The Texas A&M Lady Aggie vol leyball team woke from their mid season slumber by overpowering the Rice Owls 15-7, 15-6, 15-5 Wednes day at G. Rollie White. The Lady Aggies, 10-18, won their first conference match by play ing nearly flawless volleyball through a total team effort. The match didn’t have the indi vidual stars, instead the team was led by many players. Vivian Viera, Kelli Kellen and Cheri Steensma com bined for 24 kills and a .489 attack percentage. Kellen and Steensma also teamed for nine solo blocks. “We came out with a whole differ ent attitude, we’re just sick of lo sing,” Steensma said. “We know we can win if we play like a team and we showed that tonight.” Viera said, “We really put it to gether and I hope it stays that way. We did a lot of things that we were supposed to be doing way back in the beginning. “It felt different out there, it was like six people bonding together in stead of six individuals playing.” The Lady Aggies were in control of the match the entire time due to consistent blocking of the Owls’ shots. “Things we had been working on for months finally came together in a match setting," Volleyball Coach A1 Givens said. “They had five solo blocks in a row and that’s the kind of thing that we have been looking for but hadn’t been happening. “There were some really good in dividual plays, which in turn trans ferred into real positive team play.” The Lady Aggies showed their domination early in the match and never looked back. “The difference was that we took control of the match early," Givens said. “I think they came to play to night.” offensively and defensively," Gra said. With the Aggies’ 1-6 SWCreconl Givens said the team has set k< goals. “Our role now is the spoiler, ok viously the conierenti championship is out of thepictuif he said. “Our goal is to go unde feated through the second I the season and not lose to the saa team twice.” Givens said he was pleased ni! the intensity the team showed dm ing the match. The Owls’ efforts were hindered by the loss of junior setter Lara Ep person, who earned all-Southwest Conference honors last season. Ep person left the team last week be cause of academic reasons. “Rice looked somewhat diso riented, but we had a lot to do with that because of what we were doing “We lowered the score each and that showed they hadalevdi intensity that didn’t relax," theift ond-year coach said. “All seasonn would get ahead and relax, Jo® the other team to come back. “Every time we hit the court, wit displaying that the learning istafei place.
