Gudelman says he helps
students plan a strategy for
approaching interviews and
helps with resumes.
“The number one thing
students need to know before
they go in for an interview is
themselves,” he said. “They
have to have a good grasp of
where they want to go, then
establish priorities to take steps
to get that first job.
“Students need to have an
understanding of the industry
they are interested in. If they
don’t have a firm grasp they
might end up with a job they
don’t want.
“If students don’t know
enough about the job they
want, they go to our library here
and read up. We want them to
understand that if they are
informed enough about what
they want, they are in control of
their own destiny. ”
So say the experts. But
no matter what people say,
graduates still have fears about
getting jobs, and they want their
jobs to be good ones. Senior
John Cones, a scientific
nutrition major, said job
prospects look good for him.
“I am interested in
pharmaceutical sales, ” he says.
“I have a strong science
background, which will really
come in handy. But I already
have a job offer, and things are
looking really good for me. ”
But while job offers are good,
graduates don’t want to take
the first thing that comes along.
Although doing so may give a
sense of security, the first offer is
not always the best.
Mike Derr, a senior
mechanical engineering major,
says although he has gotten a
job offer from a firm, he is still
interviewing.
“Interviewing really wasn’t a
scary thing for me, ” he says,
“because I had two summers of
experience in my field, and the
interveiwers talked about that.
“One offer is nice, but I’m
not ready to decide. I have
done five interviews so far, and
I have two more this week. I’d
like to get three or four offers
and choose, and not just stick
with the first thing I get. ”
Job offers don’t always come
with the first round of
interviews, however. Gala
Jones, a senior business
analysis major, says she is still
waiting to hear from people.
“I have done four interviews,
and I think they went well. It
usually takes about a month to
hear back from people, ” she
says.
Jones says interviewing gets
easier with practice.
“The first interview is a little
nerve-racking,” she says. “But
after the first two or three, the
questions get a little routine,
and the answers come easier. ”
Jones says grades are
important in her major.
“Students who have over a
3.0 have a better chance at the
good jobs, ” she says. “1 don’t
have a 3.0 overall, but I do in
my major, and that is important,
too.
“One company told me they
were looking for people who
could communicate. Also, a lot
of companies look at campus
leadership, so even though
grades are important, they
aren’t the only thing. ”
