Big fun under the Big Top by Joy Swanzy Circus Vargas, the world’s largest traveling “Big Top” circus, will appear at the Brazos County Rodeo Arena in Bryan Oct. 27-29, performing five shows. The two-and-a-half hour show features over 400 performers and animals from throughout the world performing under a tent the size of a football field. Debbie Luther, marketing director for the circus, said one of the show’s more exciting acts is Alan Gold, a lion and tiger trainer who performs alone in a steel cage with 20 lions and tigers. Two aerial acts that are sure to excite the crowd are the Ayak Bros, and the duo of Guzman and Camady. The Ayak Bros., a trapeze act performed 40 feet above the ground without a safety net, is guaranteed to give the audience thrills, Luther said. The high-wire duo of Guzman and Camady entertain on a three-fourths-inch steel wire above the crowd. The $15 million production, which features a wardrobe valued at more than half a million dollars and elephant blankets costing $5,000 each, has performed for over 35 million people to date. The circus travels to over 100 cities nationwide each year, performing approximately 600 shows for over 2.5 million people. The circus was founded 17 years ago by Clifford Vargas, whose goal was to return the circus to the rich tradition it once was. Vargas believed that the circus was a slice of Americana that must not die. He is not the typical corporate chief executive, however. He is often found driving trucks, taking tickets or helping set up the tent. Tent raising ceremonies will be Oct. 27 at 10:30 a.m. The tent the circus uses consists of 90,000 square feet of fabric and takes 40 men six to eight hours to set up. The opening performance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, followed by shows set for 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. Advance tickets are on sale at the Circus Vargas office in the food court at Post Oak Mall, at the MSC Box Office, and at the circus. Students and faculty members will receive $2 off the regular price, which ranges from $7.50 to $9.50. Movies All movies and times are provided by the theaters, and are subject to change.
