Aggie golfer excels on European tot
Mayo competes in British Open and Masters

Ham. What’s a ham? It’s not a
word Paul Mayo has ever heard
used to describe himself.
During the summer, Mayo, a
Texas A&M recreation and parks
major, won The Amateur Golf
Championship, more commonly
known as the British Amateur
Championship, in England.
“There were players from all
over the world,” Mayo, a senior
from South Wales, said. “And I
won it.
“I also won the European Am
ateur Order of Merit. In all the
tournaments played in and
around Europe, you accumulate
points just like on the pro tour —
except they accumulate money.
At the end, I had the most points.
“I convincingly won that order
of merit because I finished and
won more tournaments than any
one. This gives me, in actuality,
the number one golf rating in Eu
rope.”
Winning the British Amateur
Championship, one of Mayo’s
summer goals and accomplish
ments, made him eligible to play
at the British Open, The Masters,
and various other tournaments.
Mayo finished four rounds of
the British Open, and in the sec
ond round he was tied for the
25th position.
“I was one of two amateurs that
finished four rounds,” Mayo said,
“and I was the best finishing ama
teur out of the two of us.”
Mayo won the silver medal,
and sat at the top table during the
British Open presentation.
“The whole tournament was
exciting because I was brushing
shoulders with the greats — Nick-
laus, Watson, Palmer and Player,”
Mayo said. “I was one of them for
a week, and it was a lot of fun.
“The last 18 holes in the fourth
round, I played with Fuzzy Zoel-
ler,” Mayo said, “and that was an
experience.”
Mayo said Zoeller came into
the locker room and asked him if
he had tennis shoes on because
they weren’t going to hang out on
the golf course — they were
going to play golf, and get it over
with.
In April, Mayo will have the
opportunity to play in the Mas
ters.
“I talked to Tom Watson dur
ing the Open, and he is going to
play some practice rounds with
me before the Masters,” Mayo
said.
Although Mayo has played
with some of golfs greatest, he
tries to refrain from being in awe
of them.
“This last year. I’ve been trying
to train myself from idolizing golf
pros,” Mayo said. “I have to re
member someday they’re going
to be my peers.
“At the Open, I tried to be one
of them because I had every right
to be there. I couldn’t go around
asking for autographs because
people were asking me for mine.”
Mayo has always been involved
with golf in one capacity or the
other. His parents introduced
him to golf when he was 13 and
he started playing competitively
when he was 15.
“When I was 16, I won the
Welsh National Junior Cham
pionship,” Mayo said, “and Fig
ured out this was a pretty fun
game. Things just started to
snowball from there.”
Mayo wanted to pursue a ca
reer in golf, but his parents
wanted him to go to college.
“I just wanted to play golf and
I heard A&M was a good school,
with a good golf team and good
facilities,” Mayo said. “This
seemed like a natural progression
— playing golf and going to col
lege.
“My decree will help me if I
want to be involved in the country
club scene, either as a pro or in
management. The degree will
also be good just because it’s from
Texas A&M.”
Going to Texas A&M was a
new experience for Mayo.
“Coming here has been a ma
jor stepping stone in my golf
career,” he said. “I have fond
memories of A&M, but I am
looking forward to graduating in
December to bigger and better
things.”
