The real Aggies finally showed up

Baylor, a team that always gives

The defense returned to form as
well Saturday, limiting the Bears to
just 213 total yards while recovering
three fumbles and intercepting Bay
lor quarterback Brad Goebel once.
“In the second half A&M
whipped our tails out there,” Baylor
Coach Grant Teaff said. “The way
the game was going, I think we could
have played until midnight and
there would have been no way we
could have won.”
Baylor only had four first downs
in the seond half to go along with 82
total yards.
A&M established itself quickly,
driving 66 yards on 10 plays to take a
6-0 lead. Place kicker Scott Slater
botched the extra-point attempt, his
second misfire of the season.
Lewis had scored on an eight yard
run, but his touchdown may mot
have been because of an apparent
A&M fumble four plays earlier.
Lewis took a pitch-out on the
Bears’ 38 yard line, but dropped the
ball and Baylor’s Eugene Hall recov
ered. However, an inadvertant whis
tle before the fumble enabled the
Aggies to retain possession.
“Someone in the stands, some Ag
gie, blew a whistle,” Teaff joked.
“And once that whistle was blown,
they (the referees) ruled the play
dead.”
Baylor’s offensive unit drove
down to the A&M five yard line on
its next possession,but a goal-line
stand by the Aggie defense held the
Bears to a field goal.
“It was a big series (the goal-line
stand) and we were up to the chal
lenge,” A&M linebacker Dana Ba
tiste said. “We knew coming in here
that they (the Bears) could make
some big plays, but I think that de
fensive stand gave us some momen
tum.”
The Aggies took a 12-3 lead when
Larry Horton scored on a 4-yard
run. The Bears came back to make it
12-10 on a 28-yard pass from Goebel
to Ben Baker.
Baylor punted after three downs
to open the second half, and the Ag
gies didn’t waste any time in reaf
firming themselves as the team to
beat in the SWC.
Lewis got his second touchdown
on another 8-yard run with 10:39
left in the third quarter.

“It (the touchdown pass) was a
corner route and it felt great,” Rich
ardson said. “It’s nice to get into the
rhythm of the game and we’re fi
nally jelling as an offensive unit.”
A&M got the ball back after an
other stalled Bear drive, and it
promptly drove down to the Baylor
18 where Scott Slater set up for a
field goal attempt. However, Stump
mishandled the snap and instead
found tight end Wally Hartley for a
5-yard completion and a first down.
Matt Gurley dove in for a 2-yard
touchdown five plays later to make
the score 27-10 after Pavlas com
pleted a 2-point conversion pass to
Rod Harris.
A&M scored for the last time
when Richardson fired a 5-yard
touchdown strike to Harris, who was
The Aggies are virtually assured
of having a 6-2 record going into the
Nov. 14 game with Arkansas at Kyle
Field. In the next three weeks A&M
faces Rice in Houston and Louisiana
Tech at Kyle Field before an open
date Nov. 7.
Hopefully, we’ve seen the last of
the “replacement” Aggies.
Lady Aggies still winless in SWC play

HThe Texas A&M volleyball team is
still missing one thing — its first con
ference win.
The Lady Aggies’ hopes for that
first win were shattered by Baylor
Priday night in Marrs-McLean Gym
ill Waco.
The Bears defeated the Lady Ag
gies 16-14, 15-13, 11-15, 15-8, which
left the Lady Aggies with a 9-16 re
cord overall and an 0-4 mark in
Southwest Conference play. Baylor
is 1-2 in the SWC.
■The Lady Aggies and A&M Head
Coach A1 Givens took the loss harder
than other conference losses.
“This is a real hard loss personal
ly,” Givens said, “because this is only
the second time in the history of our
program that Baylor has beaten us.
So it hurts a little more than some of
the other losses we’ve suffered.”
Junior outside attacker Cheri
Steensma said, “I don’t know what
happened. If we knew, it wouldn’t
have happened. The only way we
can go is up.”
A&M junior Vivian Viera led the
team on offense and defense. On of
fense, she recorded 13 attacks out of
35 attempts and two service aces. De
fensively, Viera had 15 digs.
The Baylor attack was led by
freshman Susan Musgrove who had
18 kills in 46 attempts.
The Lady Aggies’ problem is diffi
cult to detect.
“I think the problem is two-fold,”
Givens said. “The players are not
taking responsibility for their play
on the court. That’s the biggest
problem.
“The second thing I see out there
is an attitude that shows a real lack of
trust in their teammates. They feel
like they have to do it all themselves,
individually, or it’s not going to get
done. That leads them to overplay
ing or attempting things tactically
that they cannot do technically.
“When the game is on the line, in
stead of showing that true fighting
Aggie spirit, we crumble under pres
sure. I really don’t know what that’s
a function of.”
Steensma agreed that it is a men
tal problem.
“It’s not physical,” Steensma said.
“It’s something mental. We just have
to put our minds to it and have faith
in one another. We have to trust the
person we are playing next to.”
The Lady Aggies will play Notre
Dame Tuesdsay at 7:30 p.m. in G.
