Big Tex beckons again
by Melisa Hohlt
Got those mid-semester
blues? Bored completely out of
your mind? Maybe you’ve seen
and done everything possible
in town and now you’re ready
to skip off to a land of wonder
and fun. Fear no more because
the 101st State Fair of Texas
has begun.
Although the fair began last
weekend, you still have two
more weeks to get to Fair Park
in Dallas for the kind of fun that
only rolls around once a year.
If you’ve ever been to the
fair before, you know that Big
Tex is the one attraction you
just can’t miss — no matter
how hard you try.
Tex is the long, tall Texan
that has become the best-
known symbol of the fair. This
big fella wears the biggest pair
of Lee jeans you’ll ever see,
and his 23-foot waistline is
every dieter’s nightmare.
Other exciting attractions
include concerts, exhibits,
parades and even several
performances of the musical
“South Pacific.”
If you are amazed by sea
creatures, the Sea World
exhibit won’t let you down.
This is just a small sample of
what you will see at the Sea
World park opening next year
in San Antonio.
For the types who go to
amusement parks and cling to
the breathtaking rides like
plastic wrap clings to your
body, the Midway has
everything you’ll need.
Included in these thrills is the
famous Texas Star ferris wheel.
One thing fair-goers can’t
forget is the fattening, sugary,
cholesterol-filled foods that
make the fair what it is to those
who love it Be sure to keep in
mind the salt-water taffy, the
popcorn and the cotton candy.
If all this, and a lot more,
sounds like what you’ve been
waiting for, you might want to
head out to the fair, either this
weekend or maybe even
during the next week.
Weekday admission is $3 for
adults and Si for children.
Weekend rates are $5 for
adults and $2 for children.
Parking costs $3 per car.
If you can get 25 adults or
more to make the road trip with
you, the weekday prices will
get you in the gates any day of
the week. And if your
roommate is an old fuddy-
duddy, give him or her the
word that Senior Citizens get in
free on Tuesdays.
