Rollie; Singer says he enjoys the hullabaloo by Staci Finch The man who put Amarillo on the map is coming to College Station. George Strait, the 1986 Country Music Association’s male vocalist of the year, will be performing at 8 p.m. Oct. 9 at G. Rollie White Colliseum. Strait, who started out playing in bars and dance halls all over south and central Texas, has a true country feel to his songs. “All My Exes Live In Texas, ” “It Ain’t Cool To Be Crazy” and the famous “Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind?” are as country as the songs of his idols, George Jones and Merle Haggard. Strait says his true-country style won’t change. “My producer wanted me to lean to more middle-of-the-road songs, and that’s why we parted company,” he told The DetoitNews in April. “I want to be hard core about something,” he added. “I don’t want to be in the middle of the road. A fella could get run over out there. ” When you mix country music with a man as attractive as Strait, female fans inevitably gather round. Although Strait is married, that doesn’t deter the fans, and Strait’s concerts usually include females screaming and begging for autographs. However, Strait said he likes all the hullabaloo. “I enjoy having the fans (screaming) out there, ” he said. “I enjoy their reaction. It really makes my job easier. ” Appearing with Strait will be Holly Dunn. Born a preacher’s daughter in San Antonio, she spent several years in Nashville writing songs for other singers, such as “I’m Not Through Lovin’ You Yet” for Louise Mandrell. But when Dunn’s single, “Daddy’s Hands, ” was released she began to establish herself as a singer in her own right, and was voted 1987 top new female vocalist by the Academy of Country Music.
