First on the recording is Four Hams on Rye. Songs by the group include “Burn this Place into the Ground,” a roots rock V roll tune, “When I Look into Your Eyes, ” a nice country rocker and “You’re All I Need.” Fusion contributes “The Things,” “White Tube” and “Passin’ Time.’’“The Things” and “Passin’ Time” are nice jazz numbers and “White Tube” is an enjoyable pop song that recalls the new wave movement of the early 1970’s. I Can’t Find My Sheep adds three diverse songs. “Lost in the Grass” sounds like the music on Brian Eno’s classic album “Before and After Science. ” “Nordic Sailor” is reminiscent of the British group King Crimson, and “Backstreet Forward” is the band’s other song. Subversive Youth shows much of the energy that was present during the punk explosion that occured in Los Angeles in the late 1970’s and early 80’s. The vocals of Shawn Manning, lead singer, sound much like those of Exene Cervenka on “Los Angeles,’’the first album of the California band X. The three songs by Subversive Youth, “What Liberty,” “I Walk Alone” and “Shadow,” are all good, with “What Liberty” being the best. The person who had the concept for this cassette is not credited, but he and John Maffei, who compiled the music, along with KANM and the participating musicians, created something the local music scene has needed for a long time. It would be nice to see more recordings like this in the future. In “Real Men” he is able to take a weak, implausible script and add the elements the film needs to make it an enjoyable comedy. Belushi plays super spy Nick Pirandello whose assignment is to protect Bob Wilson, portrayed by John Ritter. It seems that Wilson, a suburban family man, looks exactly like a U.S. agent who was recently killed on a mission of global importance. The dead spy was to have rendezvoused with some extraterrestrials who have a package that can keep life on the planet from dying out because of TEXAS STATE LOW COST INSURANCE LIABILITY from 15 00 • Immediate coverage • All cars • AU problems • All drivers LOW DOWN LOW MONTHLY PAYMENT PAYMENTS • Motorcycles • Same day SR-22 775-1 988 3202 S. Tsxas Across from WalMart some particularly nasty chemicals that were dumped in the ocean. The plan is for Wilson to impersonate the murdered spy, and Pirandello’s job is to see that Wilson makes it to the rendezvous spot. Pirandello has the only map to this spot and there are several people who will kill to get it, including the Soviets and a group of renegade U.S. agents. Ritter is adequate as the unwitting suburbanite swept into the world of covert activities, but Belushi’s character is the only reason to see this movie. It is largely due to Belushi’s efforts that this movie is funny. He is able to turn scenes that would be marginally humorous with anyone else into genuinely funny scenes. It is not the script but Belushi’s delivery that makes the film work. A good example is the scene where Pirandello first introduces himself to the unwitting Wilson. The portrayal of the top spy who nonchalantly explains to Wilson why his house is being attacked by Soviet agents is a real treat. The script of “Real Men” leaves much to be desired, but fortunately Belushi is there to save the movie. -Review by Tom Reinarts Smile Improvement Specialist Meet Dana Connell, director of dental hygiene for the CarePlus Family Dental Center.
