Houston professor studying use of smokeless tobacco [ i among Little League players HOUSTON (AP) — A University of Houston scientist is using a $1.6 million grant to study Little League laseball players’ use of smokeless to- iacco in hopes of fighting oral can- :er. Richard Evans, a psychology pro- essorand principal investigator for he National Cancer Institute-spon- ored five-year project, estimated 10 lercent of all teen-agers chew or dip obacco. That’s about the same per- :entage as adult usage and is up 3 to § percent in the past six years. “We have a chance now to stem the tide, before this becomes estab lished,” he said. Evans said an earlier study by the school showed 55 percent of high school or junior high school students who used the smokeless tobacco be gan the practice before the age of 12. Evans said he believes usage is climbing because smokeless tobacco is more easily concealed than ciga rettes. AUSTIN (AP) — A religious group that wants to continue offer ing Bible eburses at the University of Texas has sued the university in fed eral court. The Biblical Studies Association, which has sponsored the courses through endowed chairs, asked in the lawsuit filed last week that the course arrangements be declared constitutional. The university does riot plan to offer the courses after this semester because Attorney General Jim Mat tox ruled that the course arrange ments violate the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The practice of a state university giving credit for courses in which in structors are paid by a religious group represents an “excessive en tanglement” between church and state, Mattox ruled. Mattox said the university could continue to offer the courses if they are made regular university courses with instructors selected and paid by the university. However, university officials said they did not wish to take those steps. Gary Thornton, an attorney rep resenting the association, said, “Our position is that the courses were not unconstitutional to begin with. “Still, the attorney general said the problem could be solved easily. ... So we don’t think com plete cancellation of the courses is justified,” he said. The court could not force the uni versity to continue the Bible courses, but it could clarify the issues sur rounding them, Thornton said. O _ce —l.D.,F.A,A,P.
