Texas crime rate and the volume of
major crimes were up during the
first half of 1987, compared with the
same period last year, the Depart
ment of Public Safety reported
Thursday.
Statistics supplied by law enforce
ment agencies indicated that the
statewide rate of violent crimes de
clined, while property crimes in
creased.

months of this year rose 4.4 percent
to 3,761.1 crimes per hundred thou
sand population,,” said Col. Leo Gos
sett, DPS director.
According to the reports sub
mitted by 804 law enforcement
agencies to the DPS’ crime reporting
program, murders were down 10.5
percent, from 1,072 between Jan
uary and June of 1986 to 959 in the
same period this year.
