DeBerg, who beat out No. 1 draft pick Vinny Testaverde, passed for 333 yards and a team-record five touchdowns as the Buccaneers crushed the Atlanta Falcons 48-10 in Ray Perkins’ debut as Tampa Bay coach. The Tampa Bay offense, which ranked No. 27 among the NFL’s 28 teams in 1986, was virtually unstop pable in the first half when DeBerg directed scoring drives of 91, 76 and 80 yards before Rick Woods re turned an interception 42 yards to set up Tampa Bay’s fourth touch down. Redskins 34, Eagles 24 Doug Williams, replacing the in jured Jay Schroeder, threw two touchdown passes to Art Monk lead ing Washington over Philadelphia. Williams passed for 272 yards in his second NFL appearance since 1982, including a 39-yard TD pass to Monk on the first play of the fourth quarter to snap a 24-24 tie. Williams’ other scoring pass was for 6 yards to Monk in the first quarter. Later, Williams’ 46-yard pass to Gary Clark set up a 40-yard field goal by Steve Cox with 5:20 left. He also had a 57-yard pass to Ricky Sanders to set up a 1-yard TD run by Reggie Branch in the third quarter. Steelers 30, 49ers 17 Rookie cornerback Delton Hall put Pittsburgh in the lead with a 50- yard fumble recovery return and Mark Malone overcame a nine-of-33 passing performance against turn- over-prone San Francisco. The Steelers, coming off their first winless preseason in 22 years, took a 20-3 lead by shutting down the 49ers’ running game and pres suring 49ers quarterback Joe Mon tana into throwing hurried incom pletions. Pittsburgh forced five turnovers and converted three of them into points. Hall, a second-round draft choice from Clemson making his first NFL start, grabbed Joe Cribbs’ fumble in midair and raced untouched into the end zone with 9:03 left in the first quarter. Patriots 28, Dolphins 21 New England scored twice within 50 seconds of the third quarter on Tony Collins’ 7-yard run and Ron nie Lippett’s 20-yard interception return against Miami. Dan Marino threw three touch down passes that gave the Dolphins a 21-14 halftime lead. Marino went out with an apparent eye injury with 2:22 left in the game and backup quarterback Don Strock led the Dolphins to the Patriots’ 3- yard line with five seconds left, but his pass into the end zone was in complete. With the score tied 21-21, Marino threw a short pass to Bruce Hardy, who deflected it toward Lippett. The cornerback raced untouched to his first NFL touchdown with 7:52 left in the third period. Jets 31, Bills 28 Ken O’Brien threw two touch down passes and former Texas A&M running back Johnny Hector ran for two scores as the New York Jets held off Buffalo. A reshuffled Jets offensive line, after allowing three Buffalo sacks in the first half, gave O’Brien ample time to pass, and the Jets quar terback responded with a 55-yard scoring bomb to Wesley Walker and a 4-yard scoring pass to Mickey Shuler. Saints 28, Browns 21 Bobby Hebert threw two touch down passes to Hoby Brenner, and Bruce Clark and Brett Maxie both sacked Bernie Kosar in the end zone in the fourth quarter as New Orleans whipped Cleveland. Dalton Hilliard ran 5 yards for a third-quarter touchdown for the Saints, and Morten Andersen kicked a clinching 39-yard field goal with 1:43 left in the game. Rueben Mayes rushed for 147 yards for New Or leans. Kosar completed 28 of 38 passes for 314 yards and two touchdowns for Cleveland. He also ran 3 yards for a fourth-quarter score that tied the game 21-21. Bengals 23, Colts 21 Boomer Esiason threw two touch down passes in the first quarter and Jim Breech kicked a 20-yard field goal after a fight-marred fourth- quarter drive, helping Cincinnati beat Indianapolis. On the first play of the final quar ter, with Indianapolis leading 14-13, the Colts’ Dave Ahrens was called for unnecessary roughness on a tackle of James Brooks. Players from both sides began fighting, and India napolis linebacker Cliff Odom and Cincinnati fullback Larry Kinne- brew were ejected. Chiefs 20, Chargers 13 Rookie Paul Palmer returned a kickoff 95 yards late in the fourth quarter to give Kansas City its victory over San Diego. Palmer, the Chiefs’ first-round draft choice, broke free behind a block by Paul Coffman and won a foot race down the right sideline with 3:19 left in the game. Christian Okoye, the Chiefs’ sec ond-round draft choice, ran 43 yards for a second-quarter touch down and finished with 105 yards rushing. Vikings 34, Lions 19 Wade Wilson, whose three inter ceptions put Minnesota in a 16-3 first-half hole, threw a 73-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Carter to spark a 21-point third-quarter rally against Detroit. Carter was an even bigger culprit than Wilson on two of the intercep tions, as perfect passes from Wilson went right through his hands and into the arms of Detroit defenders. Wilson, starting in place of the in jured Tommy Kramer, finished with three touchdown passes. Broncos 40, Seahawks 17 John Elway threw for 338 yards and four touchdowns, Rich Karlis kicked four field goals and Dennis Smith forced two third-quarter turn overs as Denver routed Seattle. Elway completed 22 of 32 passes and had touchdown completions of 72 yards to Steve Sewell, 4 yards to Steve Watson, 5 yards to Orson Mobley and 59 yards to Vance John son as Denver scored 33 straight points after trailing 17-7 in the sec ond quarter. Elway was helped by a defense that forced three turnovers in a 10- minute stretch at the end of the first half and beginning of the second and had five in all. The turnovers led to 27 Denver points. Raiders 20, Packers 0 Marcus Allen rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown on a career- high 33 carries and Vann McElroy returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown as the Los Angeles Raiders blanked Green Bay. The Raiders intercepted quar terback Randy Wright three times in their NFL season-opening victory over the Packers, who were bogged down by their own mistakes, includ ing 12 penalties for 72 yards. Wright, booed by Green Bay fans, completed eight of 21 passes for 99 yards before being replaced in the fourth quarter by rookie Don Majkowski.
