The city of College Station alone has 859 acres of park land in 29 dif ferent parks, says Tony Cisneros, as sistant director of the College Sta tion Parks and Recreation Department. “The citizens expect a good avail ability of parks,” Cisneros says. And the citizens are instrumental in obtaining park land through bond elections, he says. People regard parks as a way of “neighborhood identification,” he says. Actually, Cisneros says, neigbor- hood parks are only one of the two types of public parks in College Sta tion; the other type is the commu nity park. Neighborhood parks are strictly designed for day use. They are easily accessible, by walking distance, to most people in the area. Community parks have athletic fields, restrooms and parking lots, Cisneros says. “The variety of parks makes it in teresting,” he says. Another type of park also is being devised in College Station, Cisneros says. Lick Creek Park is a 515-acre area southeast of College Station, he says, which is “untouched" — kept natural for uses such as nature stud ies and bird watching. Three of the community parks in College Station have swimming pools — Bee Creek Park, Thomas Park and Southwood Athletic Cen ter. The public can swim for S1 per day at these pools, Cisneros says. The money for maintenance of College Station’s parks comes from the city’s general fund through tax money collected from the citizens, he says. The general fund is not used for expansion, only for upkeep and general use, he says. iereni "L'se depends on theind l \i ()S Cisneros says. “The variety, all ows people to seek either )ther i or something completely : “j t ’s like a rowdy game of Fnsbet ly S Carolyn Greig, a senior 'kiefs. ’ tai \ education major, sai pTht- park gives me a place to ref fork a to childhood, to get atvayfrciMLi Bryan offers rental of pnBfcoi ered areas at three of its Jifo- lr I angle wood, Aston and “Ma A and B, says Pam Ptbonl. feys.
