UT system campuses to drop connection with religious courses AUSTIN (AP) — University of Texas campuses will drop any offi cial connection with Bible courses taught by instructors who are se lected or paid by religious groups, officials said. The change stems from a legal opinion Attorney General Jim Mat tox issued last May, and UT presi dents were notified of the policy this week, said James Duncan, executive vice chancellor for academic affairs. The Bible courses were being of fered at three UT campuses — Aus- Thief takes gear; baseball team begs for bats HOUSTON (AP) — The Orange all-star baseball team had to beg and borrow bats, gloves and cleats for a championship tournament because the car carrying their equipment was stolen from a hotel parking lot. Team members said much of the $1,500 worth of equipment stolen Tuesday had sentimental value and had been “broken in” after more than 70 games. Uuckily, some of the boys had taken their equipment to their rooms. “I had a first baseman’s mitt that was personal to me because it was my dad’s when he played in high school,” said Ronnie Teaff, 14. “I also had a pitching glove, some shoes, some batting gloves and a bat bag.” Howard Dobson, 14, said he lost three gloves and an orange Louis ville Slugger — a bat worth $ 100. When parent sponsors discovered the car missing from a northwest ho tel parking lot Tuesday morning, they immediately began scrambling for replacement equipment for the Texas Pony Sectional Tournament game that night. But rain postponed the game un til Wednesday night. Teaffs father, Ron, owner of the car, said the team’s coach drove back to Orange to borrow replacement equipment. The car still was missing Wednes day afternoon, police Lt. Bob Martin said. FASHION SHOW Talent Show - all age groups. Hurry! Enter the Great Bryan/C.S. Fashion Show & Talent Competition. Now, transfer credit will he limited to religious studies courses offered by accredited institutions, Duncan said. William Hilgers, an Austin attor ney for Friends of the Biblical Tradi tion, a group that supports continu ing the courses, said he thinks the UT system has misinterpreted Mat tox’s opinion. Under procedures dating to 1919, UT-Austin has offered credit for courses taught by instructors who hold chairs affiliated with the Bibli cal Studies Association, an off-cam pus, interdenominational group. Chair-holders have been ap proved by UT-Austin, but paid by denominations that belong to the BSA. The instructors aren’t consid ered faculty members, hut are listed in the campus directory and have faculty identification cards. Similar Bible courses have been offered at UT-E1 Paso and UT-Ar- lington, as well as at a dozen or more other state universities, but how the courses are administered varies at each campus. The attorney general’s opinion said state universities may continue to give credit for religion courses of fered by religious organizations if the universities “operate within con stitutional guidelines.” The opinion said those guidelines include requirements that the courses he secular in nature, do not “advance or inhibit religion,” and “be offered in a manner that avoids excessive entanglement between government and religion.” cycles etc Tour cfe Franci You Won't find 1987 miTBba'S OR Blanchl's CHEAPER ANYWHERE! Duncan’s letter to the UT presi dents rules out the option of giving credit for the courses after they are separated from the universities. “While we appreciate the alterna tives detailed bv the attorney general as legally permissible, one of the pre ferred solutions, the grant of trans fer credit for a course offered by a religious organization, is not avail able to components of the University of Texas System,” Duncan wrote.
