By Kathryn McMinn Reporter eginning the Ions struction on the long-awaited parking garage, the Physical Plant was forced to find a new home. And now, it’s comfortably settled in at its new site on Agron omy Road. T he move was necessitated be cause the department had simply outgrown its facility. And that it happened to he an ideal place to build the 2000-car-capacity ga rage played a key role, Joe Estill, director of the Physical Plant, said. “Two of the old plant’s build ings would have had to he re placed because of deterioration, so the University administration felt the move was warranted,” he said. The move to the new site oc- cured shortly after Christmas and by the beginning of February it was business as usual for the Physical Plant Department. The cost of the new plant to Texas A&M consisted of two types of payments. li.F.W. Const ruction of Temple received about Sf> million for contracting costs and more than $6 million went to project costs, including construction costs, architecture expenses, in spection of (lie site and utilities extensions, Estill said. “The costs were expensive, but worth it, because the new site has the capacity to house more of our shops,” Estill said. “There is now a warehouse to store our auto mobiles, which we didn’t have be fore, and there’s much more room for our 400 employees.” The new site is further from the main campus than the former plant buildings were located. But Estill said this didn’t in any way hinder the department’s ability to handle its duties. “The department has a con cept that utilizes four area main tenance sites on campus.
