John got of class early that day
and decided to hurry home, but he
stopped short when he saw his sports
car.
The pavement glittered with bro
ken glass and a brick lay in the driv
er’s seat — his brand-new stereo was
gone.
Although John is a fictitous char
acter, his story is representative of
many victims of auto burglary, one
of the most common crimes in the
Bryan-College Station area.
Three different situations in the
area make cars vulnerable to theft.
A&M has numerous parking lots,
College Station has several apart
ment complexes — inhabited mainly
by college students — and Bryan is a
vulnerable family community.
The A&M campus has over 85
parking lots with thousands of unat
tended vehicles, says Bob Wiatt, di
rector of University traffic and secu
rity.
“They’re like sitting ducks,” Wiatt
says. “We have officers patrolling
the parking lots, but they can’t be ev
erywhere at once.”
Most of the burglaries occur dur
ing the day — mainly in lots farther
from the main campus.
The burglars often break into un
locked cars, but if they want some
thing out of a locked car they usually
break a window with a brick, Wiatt
says. i
“Stereos and radar detectors are
the hottest items on the market,”
Wiatt says. “Siphoning gas is another
thing. We’ve caught people doing
this who are surprised to find out
that it carries the same punishment
as burglary. Siphoning gas is break
ing and entering.”
Stealing parts and accessories
from a car is another problem.
Wheels and hubcaps are the most
common parts taken, Wiatt says.
From September 1986 to Feb
ruary 1987, 52 auto thefts were re
ported, and 49 people reported that
parts and accessories were stolen
from their cars.
This was a 13 percent drop from
the same period last year, hut Wiatt
wants to see even lower figures.
“Fifty-two is higher than it ought
to be,” he says.
University Police officers patrol
parking lots to curb auto burglaries,
but Wiatt says the most effective pre
ventive measure has been stakeouts.
Six people were arrested during a
24-hour stakeout on Feb. 13 and 14,
he says.
“On the thirteenth, five men were
caught breaking into a car,” Wiatt
says. “The next day, officers caught
a man opening unlocked cars. He
had gotten into three cars before he
was arrested.”
Most of the people caught in auto
burglary cases are first-time offend
ers, Wiatt says.
Since they are usually caught in
the act — during stakeouts — their
attorneys work for reduced sen
tences, he says. They usually plead

Despite these successful stakeouts,
Wiatt stresses measures people can
take to lessen their chances of being
burglarized.
He advises people to put valuable
items like radar detectors, purses
and shopping bags in the trunk or
hide them under a coat.
“These thieves are opportunistic,”
Wiatt says. “If they see something
valuable, they can get it whether or
not the car is locked.”
Another protective measure is to
install an auto burglar alarm. Uni
versity Police Detective Will Scott
says. The alarm is expensive, hut if a
car has expensive stereo equipment,
Scott says, it’s worth it.
“More burglaries would
be deterred if people
would lock their cars. In
about 30 to 40 percent of
the cases, burglars en
tered unlocked cars. ”

If an item is stolen, it may be re
turned to the owner if the police
have the item’s serial number, he
says.
The police regularly check pawn
shops for stolen items by comparing
serial numbers from stolen goods
with serial numbers on similar items
in pawn shops.
State law requires pawn shop own
ers to keep a list of serial numbers of
items for sale.
State law enforcement officials
use two computer systems, the Texas
Crime Information Center and the
National Crime Information Center,
to locate stolen property.
When someone reports an auto
burglary to the police and gives
them the serial number, the police
put the information in the computer
system. If a police officer anywhere
in the country asks about that item,
the computer tells where and when
it was stolen, Scott says.
Wiatt says, “People can defend
themselves against auto burglary. If
people have an expensive piece of
equipment, they should care enough
about it to record the serial number
or engrave their driver’s license
number on the item. We can’t return
stolen property if people can’t iden
tify it with more than just the brand
name.
“A&M students think they live in a
fantasy land where they don’t have
to lock doors or he careful. Students
have got to learn that this is the real
world — there are people here who
will rip off anything they can.”
