Rangers slip past Red Sox
with TSth-inning home run
ARLINGTON (AP) — Pete
O'Brien hit a two-run homer with no
outs in the bottom of the 13th inning
to lift the Texas Rangers to a 5-3 vic
tory over the Boston Red Sox.
Calvin Schiraldi, 0-2, came in to
start the 13th and gave up a single to
Scott Fletcher before O’Brien hit his
second homer of the season and give
Texas the sweep of the weekend se
ries.
On Friday night, Pete Incaviglia’s
two-run homer off Schiraldi in the
10th inning had given the Rangers a
6-4 victory. Mitch Williams, 1-1,
earned the victory in relief.
Held to three hits over eight in
nings by starter Charlie Hough, the
Red Sox tied it in the ninth when
Hough hit Don Baylor leading off
the inning. Greg Harris relieved and
Dwight Evans doubled to left, send
ing Baylor to third. Baylor scored on
Harris’ wild pitch.
Roger Clemens started for Boston
and allowed 10 hits, walked four and
struck out 10 in eight innings.
The Rangers snapped a 2-2 tie in
the fifth when Curtis Wilkerson sin
gled leading off and O’Brien
walked. Both runners advanced on a
wild pitch, and Wilkerson scored on
Darrell Porter’s single. With runners
on first and third and none out,
Clemens struck out Ruben Sierra,
Geno Petralli and Tom Paciorek.
In the bottom of the first, Wilker
son singled with one out and went to
second on a single by O’Brien. Por
ter walked to load the bases and Wil
kerson scored on Sierra’s fielder’s
choice.
The Red Sox got a break on the
play when Porter, originally called
safe at second, overslid the bag and
was tagged out.
The Red Sox tied the score in the
third when Dave Henderson drew a
leadoff walk, stole second, advanced
to third on a passed ball and scored
on Wade Boggs’ single to left.
Texas took a 2-1 lead in the bot
tom of the third. Wilkerson struck
out leading off but made it to first
when Red Sox catcher Danny Sheaf-
fer couldn’t hold the third strike.
O’Brien doubled Wilkerson to
third, and after Porter struck out.
Sierra got his second RBI of the
game with a single to deep second.
But the Red Sox tied it 2-2 in the
fourth. Henderson doubled to left
leading off, went to third on a
groundout and scored on Boggs’
sacrifice fly to left.

Evert stuns Navratilova in tourney
At double-match point, Evert
clinched the victory with a drop vol
ley.
Evert had not beaten Navratilova
since the final of the French Open in
1986.
Evert played near-flawless tennis,
with a consistent baseline game.
Navratilova coasted to a 6-2 first
set edge, breaking Evert’s serve in
games one, seven and nine.
But Evert broke Navratilova to
take a 1-0 lead in the second set. Af
ter Navratilova broke back to tie the
set 1-1, she didn’t win another game
throughout the set.
“Chris started playing better,”
Navratilova said. “She wasn’t making
any unforced errors. Something
made me lose my concentration at 2-
1, and when I was down 3-1, I
thought: Tt’s a long way back unless
Chris hands me something on a sil
ver platter.’ ”
Chris didn’t, taking the second set
6-1.
Tied 1-set apiece, both players
won their serve through the first
eight games. Then, Navratilova
broke Evert’s serve on the strength
of a passing shot to take a 5-4 lead.
“I thought my chances (of win
ning) were pretty slim,” Evert said
about trailing 5-4. “That’s usually
where Martina is her toughest. But I
hung in there, and didn’t get down
on myself.”
Evert broke back to tie the set 5-5,
and then held serve to go ahead 6-5.
Navratilova won her next service
forcing the tie-breaker at 6-6.
