‘Lone Star War’ moves to The Summit
DALLAS (AP) — Round 2 of the
“Lone Star NBA War” between the
Dallas Mavericks and the Houston
Rockets will be played in The Sum
mit Arena in Houston tonight night.
The Mavericks won the first
round on a 113-107 decision
Wednesday night in a game that fea
tured hot words, flying fists and
Derek Harper’s career-high 31
points.
A1 Wood of Dallas and Steve Har
ris of Houston were ejected for
fighting before a noisy sellout crowd
of 17,007 fans in Reunion Arena.
Dallas has already clinched a play
off berth and the Midwest Division
title. Houston is in the playoffs but
the Rockets’ position hasn’t been de
termined.
“It should be another exciting
game,” Dallas Coach Dick Motta
said.
“This game had enough fire and
enthusiasm where the fans got their
money’s worth,” Houston Coach Bill
Fitch said. “In the old days, you
might not have had this kind of a
game at this stage of the season.”

It was the first meeting between
the two teams since Motta accused
Fitch of manipulating games to
avoid the Los Angeles Lakers as long
as possible in the playoffs.
Fitch replied by calling Motta’s
charges “ridiculous.”
Motta was suspended a game by
the NBA office for the statement.
“It was a crazy game,” Harper
said. “The intensity came from the
words the coaches exchanged.
That’s why we were so emotional.”
Harper said he was proud of
Wood for standing his ground in an
exchange of punches with Harris in
the second period that
benches.
“I told A1 Wood he did a good
job,” Harper said. “I like to see that
kind of stuff. I wished I had been in
it."
Wood and Harris were ejected
from the game at 5:22 in the second
period for exchanging punches.
Both benches emptied but none of
the blow r s landed. The players will

Motta downplayed the incident.
“I thought it was a very dull
game,” Motta said. “I expected some
real excitement.”
Fitch said little about the Hying
punches.
“T here were a few short tempers
out there but it wasn’t much,’' Fitch
said. “It’s an intense series. 1 thought

Phillies mired in frustration after poor start
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The
frustration shows on his face, and
the anxiety is evident in his voice.
Lance Parrish, the free—agent
catcher who signed with Philadel
phia after a prolonged and contro
versial negotiation, is suffering.
So are the Phillies, off to a 1-7
start.
Even Mike Schmidt, who should
be brimming with excitement at the
prospect of his 500th home run, is in
the dumps.
Schmidt, just two homers shy of
becoming the 14th player in history
to hit 500 or more homers, said the
problems of the team are much
greater than his goal.
“We have to turn it around as a
team right now'. That’s more an issue
with me. That’s where my personal
thoughts lie,” he said.
Schmidt is not one of the culprits
in the horrendous start. He is hitting
.345, with three homers and seven
RBI.
Manager John Felske, a low-key,
stoic type, lost his cool after Tuesday
night’s giveaway to the New York
Mets. He snapped bat handles,
stormed into his office and wrecked
it. Desk, chairs, and the wastepaper
basket all felt the wrath of Felske’s
frustration.
The manager came to the ball
park Wednesday night, his calm re
stored. He held a five-minute team
meeting in which he told his players
to just relax. He never raised his
voice. Gone were the unprintable-
words with which he described the
team’s performance the night be
fore.
Parrish is hitting .180, with just
four hits in 25 at-bats and only three
RBI.
His defensive skills also have de
serted him. He has three passed balls
and has been unable to throw any
one out. Opponents are 16 for 16 in
stolen bases.
Parrish is affected by the boos of
the Philadelphia fans, who some rate
as the worst in baseball.
“I’m just trying to do my job as
best I can,” said Parrish. “If that isn’t
enough for these people, then I
know what to do.”
Parrish feels that because
team’s 1-7 start everything hi
or doesn't do, is magnified.‘Bi
not a one-man team,"hesakl
As one of the most-recogiw-
fensive catchers in the game,
said he is more concerned
defense than his offense.
Parrish, who came to the
after a falling-out with Detn*
money, signed for $800,1
season, with an additional)?
if he is not disabled bvachroni
ailment.
Felske said he has talked*®
rish.
What did he tell him?
“Relax.”
