NO/ NOT WHEN THE AGGIES ARE COMING TO TOWN / ilEWS ITEM: RED RAIDER COACH SUSPENDS FIVE BASEBALL PLAYERS FOR RULES VIOLATIONS / dp 1987 3-poinfer may enter high schools in ’87 KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) —High schools across much of the United States will use a 3-point field goal in basketball next season. Bruce Howard, a federation spokesman, said Thursday that any state athletic association could vote to be exempt from the rule change. But the 3-point goal will be the rule wherever state associations don’t take specific action for exemptions. “The feeling is most states will fol low,” Howard said. The federation’s basketball rules committee voted at a meeting in Kansas City this week to implement the 3-point goal for boys’ and girls’ basketball next season. The basketball rules committee of the National Federation of High School Athletic Associations adopted the same 19-foot, 9-inch distance used nationally in college basketball last season. “With the growing interest in the 3-point field goal and the success that many states have already en joyed, the committee believed there was no need to delay the implemen tation of the play on a nationwide basis,” Dick Schindler, editor of the federation’s basketball rules and as sistant federation director, said Thursday. The 3-point field goal has been al lowed on an optional basis for two years. The 3-point goal in high school basketball was used in nine states during the 1986-87 season: Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Idaho, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Con necticut and Utah. It had previously been approved for use next season in Minnesota, Oklahoma and Penn sylvania, the federation said. “All states that have been using the 3-point field goal have been sup portive of the play,” Schindler said. “Most think it has made the game better, and the committee believes the 3-point field goal is here to stay at the college level. With some states using the 3-point field goal and oth ers not . . . , we’ve had two different games being played the past two years. The committee wanted uni formity across the country.” Reid's 30 points leads Houston over Portland HOUSTON (AP) — Rookie Dave Feitl scored nine of his season-high 17 points in the fourth quarter and Robert Reid scored a season-high 30 points to lead the Houston Rockets to a 119-104 victory over the Port land Trailblazers Thursday night.
