One of the greatest of all Greek Tragedies, this modem, stirringly poetic
adaptation of Euripides’ play by Robinson Jeffers is a shocking play of fire
and fury; revenge and remorse; magic and murder. Medea, a chilling tale of
a woman obsessed with vengence, provides an evening of sustained sus
pense and horror coupled with dignity and eloquence.
The critics called Medea:
“Magnificent”
“One of the world’s greatest plays!”
“A torrent of passion and terror!”
Please join us for an evening of great tragedy!

Women’s tennis team
splits weekend action
By Hal L. Hammons
Sports Writer
The Texas A&M women’s tennis
team received its first real test of the
season last weekend — and was dealt
its first loss.
But Friday’s 5-4 cliffhanger of a
loss to Louisiana State did not seem
to affect the women’s play, as they
were able to rebound from the set
back to defeat South Florida 7-2.
The Aggies are now 5-1 on the
season.
The match with LSU came down
to the last set of the day, featuring
No. 1 doubles team Kim Labus-
chagne and Lisa Keller of A&M
against twin sisters Dana De and De
Ann Worthington of the Tigers.
The Aggies had a chance to win
the match in the second set, but lost
in a tiebreaker. After the match re
sumed play the next day at Briar-
crest Country Club, LSU took com
mand of the match, winning the first
five games and coasting to a 5-7, 7-6
(7-3), 6-2 victory.
A&M Coach Bobby Kleinecke said
he was disappointed in the outcome
of the match, but not with his team’s
effort. He said the toughest thing
about the loss would be convincing
the players that they played well.
“I know it sounds corny,” Klei
necke said, “but the only way you
learn is by adversity.”
He said last year’s team always
played better after a setback like this
team received at the Tigers’ hands,
and he said he expected this year’s
team to react similarly.
Saturday’s action made Kleinecke
sound like a prophet. The Aggies
were able to snake off the loss and
play a good match against USF.
“We picked up the level of our
game,” Kleinecke said. “We learned
from (the LSU match). This team
(USF) is good but not as strong as
LSU. For us to beat them 7-2 is pret
ty good.”
The key match of Saturday’s ac
tion was the No. 4 singles match be
tween Kellie Dorman of A&M and
Gina Read of South Florida.
With the Aggies holding a 3-2
lead in the contest, Read was one
game away from sending the final
singles match of the day to a third
set. But Dorman tied it at 6-6 and
raced through the tiebreaker for a 6-
3, 7-6 (7-1) victory and a 4-2 lead for
A&M.
“Kellie’s match game gave us con
fidence,” Kleinecke said. “She did a
great job.”
The Aggies go on the road to play
Utah in Salt Lake City Wednesday
and will be in Provo for the BYU In
vitational Thursday through Satur
day.
A&M grabs 2 out of 3
in men’s tennis play
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) —
The Texas A&M men’s tennis
team won two out of three
matches at the Oklahoma State 4-
Way Indoor Tennis Tournament
this weekend at Oklahoma City,
Okla.
A&M defeated tennis power
Trinity 8-1 and downed Okla
homa University by a 6-3 count;
the Aggies’ only loss in the tour
nament was to OSU 5-4.
A&M Coach David Kent said
the Aggies could have easily come
away undefeated from the week
end’s action.
“We came within an eyelash of
beating OSU,” Kent said.
The team’s only setback to
Trinity came in No. 1 singles play
with A&M ’s Dean Goldfine fall
ing to Trinity’s Maurieio Silva 6-
7, 6-4, 2-6.
In other singles action, A&M’s
Marcel Vos (No. 2) defeated
Chris Geer 7-5, 6-4; Dean John
son of A&M (No. 3) stopped Pat
Sundh 6-4, 6-1; Brent Haygarth
(No.4) beat Eno Polo 6-3, 6-4;
and No. 5 freshman Shaun O’
Donovan handled Redek Kocek
6-1,6-0.
In doubles play, A&M’s James
Frank replaced Goldfine and
joined Vos to make up A&M’s
No. 1 team, which defeated Silva
and Kocek 6-3, 7-5; Haygarth
and Johnson downed Greer and
Sundh 6-4, 4-6, 6-2; and the No.
3 duo of O’ Donovan and Steve
Kennedy defeated Polo and Chad
Marsh 6-4, 6-4.
Kent was pleased with the out
come of the tournament, and es
pecially the big win over Trinity.
“A win over Trinity is not bad,”
he said. “I’ll take a win over them
anytime.”
The Aggies return to the Omar
Smith Tennis Center Friday to
take on Southwest Texas State,
and Saturday A&M battles Ar
kansas-Little Rock. Both matches
begin at 1:30 p.m.
Raiders devastate Lady Ags
LUBBOCK (AP) — The Texas
A&M women’s basketball team
found out over the weekend that
shooting a mere 30 percent from the
floor against a good team like Texas
Tech usually gets you beat.
In this case, the Lady Aggies took
it on the chin 72-49 against the Red
Raiders Saturday night in Lubbock
Municipal Coliseum.
A&M now stands at 8-14 on the
year and 4-8 in the Southwest Con
ference. Texas Tech raises its record
to 15-9 overall and 8-5 in SWC play.
The game marked the return of
A&M guard Donna Roper from gall
bladder surgery. She managed 10
points to tie forward Evelyn Sanders
as high scorer for the Lady Aggies'
Texas Tech center Stacey Siebert
caused all kinds of problems for
A&M. Siebert came off the bench to
block seven shots and score 13
points.
“We’re really down now,” A&M
Coach Lynn Hickey said. “We just
had a really tough time shooting to
night. We weren’t making anything
happen on offense.
“When you shoot 26 percent in
the first half, it kills you. We got so
far down that once we started mov
ing the ball it was too late to try to
play catch-up.”
The Lady Aggies remained in
front of Baylor for the last spot in
the SWC post-season tournament by
a half game and will face the Univer
sity of Houston Wednesday at 5 p.m.
in Hofeinz Pavilion in Houston.
‘Magic’ tricks lift LA
over Boston 106-103
Lakers take season series
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) —
Earvin “Magic” Johnson scored
39 points and led Los Angeles
back from a 17-point third-quar
ter deficit to a 106-103 victory
over the Boston Celtics, giving
the Lakers the best record in the
NBA.
Johnson scored eight points
over the final S'A minutes, in
cluding two clinching free throws
with four seconds to play, to lift
the Lakers to their 38tn victory in
50 games this season, one game
better than the Celtics.
With the Lakers down by
three, Johnson hit a 15-foot
jumper and then made a spin
ning layup with 1:29 to play to
give Los Angeles a 98-97 lead.
After the teams exchanged
baskets, Johnson sank an 18-
footer with 23 seconds to play to
put the Lakers ahead 102-99.
After Robert Parish scored on
a dunk, Kareem Abdui-Jabbar
made two free throws to put the
Lakers up 104-101 with 16 sec
onds to play. The free throws
ave Abdui-Jabbar 10 points,
eeping alive his streak of 743
consecutive games in double fig
ures.
Abdui-Jabbar had only two
points with seven minutes left.
A layup by Robert Parish, who
scored 20 points, got Boston
within a point, setting the stage
for Johnson to sink the two
clinching free throws with four
seconds to play.
Larry Bird, who finished with
20 points, missed a desperation
three-pointer at the buzzer.
James Worthy added 26 points
for the Lakers, who swept their
two-game series this year with
Boston. The Lakers defeated the
Celtics 117-110 on Dec. 12 in Bos
ton, snapping a 48-game winning
streak by the Celtics in Boston
Garden.
Kevin McHale scored 23 points
and Dennis Johnson added 22 for
Boston.
Los Angeles, after falling be
hind by 17 points in the third
uarter, rallied to get the lead at
6-85 when Michael Cooper hit a
three-pointer with 8'/a minutes to
play.
