MOSCOW (AP) — Plainclothes-
men pushed protesters out of a
shopping mall Wednesday, the third
day of demonstrations for a Jewish
activist who refused the Kremlin
pardon that freed 140 other impris
oned dissidents.
The protesters also demonstrated
for the right to emigrate. They car
ried placards reading, “Let us go to
Israel” and “Free Josef Begun,” who
was given a seven-year prison term
in October 1983.
U.S. Ambassador Arthur A. Hart
man called the mass release a “step
in the right direction,” hut he said
the United States continues pressing
for more free emigration.
Hartman said he had appealed to
Soviet authorities to let dissident
Naum Meiman attend his wife’s fu
neral in the United States.
Inna Meiman, 54, died Monday in
Washington where she had received
cancer treatment since leaving the
Soviet Union last month. Hartman
said the refusal since 1975 to grant
Meiman an exit visa violated “Soviet
practice and Soviet law.”
“In the last little while, the Soviet
government has recognized that
their treatment of individuals has
had an effect on their relations with
other countries,” the ambassador
said.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Gen
nady Gerasimov said at a news brief
ing Tuesday that 140 dissidents had
been released and as many other
cases were being examined. His an
nouncement has not been reported
to the Soviet public.
Gerasimov also said government
commissions were reviewing the
criminal code, hut he gave no details.
About 20 Soviets who have l>een
refused emigration visas gathered
Wednesday morning for their third
day of protest in the Arbat shopping
mall.
Authorities put Begun’s wife Inna
and son Boris under house arrest
Tuesday. Boris Begun managed to
join the demonstrators Wednesday,
but his mother remained at home.
Police did not interfere with the
Monday and Tuesday protests, but
on Wednesday plaindothesmen took
away the placards. They shoved anti
punched Western journalists and
television cameramen trying to re
port the event.
One cut the cable of a camera car
ried by a crew from the ABG Mos
cow bureau.
Some people in a crowd that gath
ered expressetl support for the pro
testers, hut others shouted anti-Se
mitic slogans referring to the Nazi
extermination of Jews.
Alter alxmt 20 minutes a man
identifying himself as a city official
told the protesters their demonstra
tion was illegal.
The plaindothesmen and
bystanders shoved (he demonstra
tors together. They tried to resist but
were pushed out of the mall into a
side street.
Uniformed {x>lice nearby took no
action. None of the protesters re-
ported injuries.
The mass release Gerasimov an
nounced covered some dissidents
jailed under a law forbidding “anti-
Soviet agitation and propaganda.”
Gerasimov said Josef Begun de
clined to submit an application for
pardon and his son said the activist
was believed to be the only person
still imprisoned under that law at
Ghistopol. How many are in labor
camps is not known.

Bush praises accomplishments
of administration, belittles Dems
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Vice
President George Bush praised the
economic and foreign policy accom
plishments of “this Republican ad
ministration” Wednesday night as he
embarked on a series of political for
ays to protect his standing as front
runner for the 1988 Republican
presidential nomination.
Bush gave his remarks in advance
of a Lincoln Day dinner with Repub
lican party faithful. The dinner was
the first stop of a two-day Midwes
tern trip, where a key supporter in
Michigan said that the Iran-Gontra
controversy is taking a political toll
on Bush’s as yet unannounced presi
dential campaign.
“There’s a tenseness that says, ‘Is
he going to get burned? Is he going
to be part of the problem?’ ” as the
controversy unfolds, said Peter Sec-
chia, co-chairman of the Bush cam
paign in Michigan.
The vice president’s dinner
speech to his Lansing audience
amounted to a political pep talk in ■
which he said “this Repubiican ad
ministration has done an outstand
ing job of leading America, and we
have the record to show for it.”
In praising Republican accom
plishments, Bush also threw a few
jabs at the Democrats.
Taking credit for the GOP for
passage of tax revision legislation.
Bush said “we have taken six million
low-income Americans off the tax
rolls completely.

Study says ulcers caused
by lack of natural antacid
Senate
BOSTON (AP) — Many ulcer
victims do not produce enough
natural antacid to protect their
intestines from digestive* juices,
and this may he a major factor-
among the elusive causes of their
misery, new research concludes.
More than 3 million Americans
suffer nicer flareups each year,
yet the cause of the illness re
mains a mystery in most cases.
Contrary to popular belief, there
is little firm evidence that stress is
a significant cause of ulcers.
In the latest study, doctors
found that most people with duo
denal ulcers — by far the most
common variety — produce sig
nificantly less bicarbonate than
usual in their intestinal linings.
Bicarbonate protects the system
from die strong acids needed to
digest food.
They said this impaired secre
tion “may lie an important factor”
in both the cause and the fre
quency of recurrence of duodenal
ulcers. If so, their finding could
help open up new strategies for
treating and preventing ibis com
mon disease.
(Continued from page 1)
Some stTnalors suggested that cut
ting clown the size would increase
the responsibilities of each senator,
and might therefore increase the
unit’s productivity*
Douglas Baird, chairman of exter
nal affairs, suggested a st rider atten
dance policy might work even belter
than such a drastic change as cutting
the Senate in half.
Senate Speaker Miles Bradshaw
stepped down from his position mo
mentarily to speak in favor of die
bill, saying nothing was permanent
and if it didn’t work, il could he
