Dear Readers:
We set out this week on what many would
consider an impossible mission — to prove
wrong the theory that College Station is a
cultural black hole. After many hours of bng f
tedious research, we've concluded that while
good ol’ CS is certainly not the artistic oasis of
Southeast Texas, neither is it a cultural desert.
In fact, we found enough culture in the local
area to turn even the most unsophisticated
cowboy into a highbrow. Just look at the fellow
on the cover.
Perhaps the only type of culture you've
become accustomed to is the kind that grows
on those things in the back of your refrigerator.
If this is the case, then you really need to read
this weeks issue.
We’ve compiled a list of cultural places and
happenings around town. We talked to J.
Wayne Stark, special assistant to the president
for cultural affairs, about what the future holds
hr fine arts at A&M We've even filled you in
on classes you can take if you want to learn to
enjoy the finer things in life.
So, if the most urbane thing you've done in
the past few weeks is watch u Top Gun”at the
dollar movie, it’s time to throw away the beer
and crackers, break out the champagne and
caviar and catch some of the cultural
excitement in Bryan-College Station. Just look
inside to find out more. ..
Notice, the attention!!page is still with us. We
were delighted to receive Tiffany’s column for
this week’s issue, but we are still waiting to hear
from you!
Don't be shy. You don’t have to be a
Faulkner or Hemmingway to write down your
feelings. If you can hold a pencil in one hand
and scratch your head with the other, then you
too can submit something to At Ease. Go ahead
and write that column or essay that you've had
in the back of your mind fora while. Then just
drop it by the Battalion with our name (At Ease)
on it.
And remember, wherever you go, there you
Cows or Culture? 8
Is College Station really a cultural void? At Ease has
concluded that there is art to be found in the local area —
you just have to look a little harder to find it. (The
champagne bucket and glass on our cover were provided
by Party Time. The cows just happened to be there.)
Classy Classes 7
Whether you are interested in art, music, drama, film or
dance, A&M can launch you on an exploration into the
world of fine arts. Culture can be found in and out of the
classroom, with courses ranging from basketweaving to
ballroom dancing.
State of the Arts 10
Why does A&M have a reputation for being an
unsophisticated cow college? What does the future hold
for fine arts at A&M? For answers to these questions and
more, turn to page 10 of At Ease.
