A&M student to appear in TV a
Recipient promotes memorial scholarship in commercia

Most students who receive scholarships get a
check in the mail, but one Texas A&M student is
getting something more — an appearance in an
Adolph Coors Co. commercial.
Almaz Smith, a junior biochemistry major
from San Antonio, is one of nine winners of the
Veteran’s Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by
Coors.
“When I got the scholarship, that did not nec
essarily mean I would be doing the commercial,”
Smith says. “That just meant I was eligible for the
commercial. The purpose of the commercial is to
publicize the scholarship and say ‘thank you’ to
American veterans.”
In June, Smith saw an advertisement for the
scholarship in “Army Echo,” a bulletin sent to
her father and other retired veterans. In August,
she was told that she was to receive $3,500 for
her junior and senior years at college, and in No
vember, Smith and her father spent three days
making the commercial in Chicago.
Smith has not seen the commercial, since it will
not air until May, after which she will receive a
small amount of money for her part in it.
“All the kids I met were very nice,” she says.
“We took down everybody’s addresses and we
sent Christmas cards to each other.”
Academic performance was an important as
pect for the scholarship winners, she says.
“They wanted to look at leadership qualities
and extracurricular activities, but I think the
main thing was academics,” she says. “Anyone
who did not have a 3.8 grade-point ratio was just
out.”
Peter C. Joannides, administrator of the Vet
eran’s Memorial Scholarship Fund, says the
scholarship is based on a point system, in which
students earn up to 100 points for their qualifica
tions, and a possible 10 extra points for the vet
eran parent’s service.
Smith gained two extra points because her fa
ther received a Purple Heart for his injury in
Vietnam, Joannides says.
“Almaz probably would have received the
scholarship without the two extra points,” he
adds.

When asked if she drinks Coors, Smith says, “I
really do not drink that much. I do have a ten
dency to say to others, ‘Hey, you drink Coors?
That’s really good. Thumbs up to you.’ ”

Luxury goods become 'drug war'spoils

DENTON (AP) — Three hangars
at a small airport in Denton County
house the spoils of the drug war, in
cluding luxury vehicles and other
expensive items seized bv the federal
government from drug dealers and
smugglers.
The 81 automobiles, vans and
trucks currently stored at the airport
include a silver-grey Mercedes that
appears to be in mint condition, Cor
vettes and Firebirds. Some are
equipped with mobile telephones.
