The Spurs, winners of seven of their last eight, raised their record to 16-29 with the non-conference vic tory. Milwaukee fell to 28-20. San Antonio built a 16-point lead, 114-98, with eight minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Then Lucas, a 6- 2 guard making his third comeback from drug rehabilitation, scored 16 points in the fourth quarter. Lucas finished the game with 20 points, 10 assists and three steals. Milwaukee’s Terry Cummings led all scorers with 32 points. He also pulled down nine rebounds. San Antonio put the game away with its board work. The Spurs hauled in 50 rebounds, compared to Milwaukee’s 26. Artis Gilmore grabbed 17 re bounds to lead the Spurs in that cat egory. Gilmore also added 10 points, mostly on inside slams coming from his five offensive rebounds. San Antonio outshot Milwaukee 55.2 percent to 52.6 percent from the field. Milwaukee controlled the opening tip, scored the first bucket of the game and held the lead for the dura tion of the first period. The Bucks parlayed five steals into a 30-29 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Spurs took their first lead of the game at the 10-minute mark of the second quarter, 33-32 on a layup by Mychal Thompson off a feed from Larry Krystkowiak. San Anto nio increased its lead to three points, 35-32, on an alley-oop pass from Johnny Dawkins to Roberston. But the Bucks stormed back be hind Cummings. The 6-9 forward nailed an eight-foot jump shot at with 7:21 remaining of the second quarter, giving Milwaukee a 38-37 lead. However, the Spurs began a 12-2 run that gave them an eight-point lead, 62-54 at the half. Our boys were getting all the loose balls and rebounds today,” Rob ertson said. “It’s very important to rogs build three-game cushion s SWC heads into second half ig ouiq ivellhac vehavtiH(AP) — T he Texas Christian They b Horned Frogs started the second hstart.’Bill of the Southwest Conference 7 poiri't basketball season just like they finished the first half of the cam paign — with a victory. ■ The 16th-ranked Horned Frogs are 18-3, the best start in the school’s history. ■ After posting an 8-0 record the first of the conference season, TCU defeated Arkansas 73-66 gamei Saturday night before a sellout )letion 'crowd of 7,216 fans, many of whom wore purple Horned Frog the Aft 'masks as they celebrated the vic- laltyaP tory. eles fc'HCarven Holcombe scored 29 yard fot points and guard Jamie Dixon but"* nad 11 points and seven assists u.is calif/against the Razorbacks. ■ hallTCP’s 22nd consecutive win at irdline'ADaniel-Meyer Coliseum put the on oid Frogs three games ahead of the |iH;kl' It was TCU’s 14th consec utive victory, the third longest :r quafy winning streak in the nation, ad mud^B Southern Methodist’s 75-73 ense. upset victory Saturday afternoon <ed up yover Baylor dropped the Bears to 6-3 and a second-place tie with Texas Tech. The Red Raiders beat Houston 55-54 Saturday night in overtime in Lubbock. In another SWC game, Texas rallied late to beat Rice, 70-69, in Houston on Sunday afternoon. TCU, the preseason favorite to win the regular season championship, still has some work left. The Frogs play their next two games on the road against Baylor and Texas A&M. The Frogs are at Baylor on Wednesday night then travel to College Station on Sunday to meet the Aggies in a 2 p.m. re gionally televised game. TCU is trying to keep from cel ebrating early. “We know we have a three- game lead and I guess you could say we can afford to lose some games,” Dixon said. “But that’s not what we’re planning to do.” TCU jumped to a 45-23 half time lead and coasted home. “We couldn’t play much better than we played in the first half,” TCU Coach Jim Killingsworth said. Arkansas Coach Nolan s Rich ardson agreed. “They just fiat out-hustled us and out-played us,” Richardson said. “They went after every re bound and got it.” There was a controversy at the end of the Houston-Tech game. Houston Coach Pat F'oster charged to mid-court after Sean Gay’s shot at the buzzer was ruled good by referee Mike Tanco. “That was strictly a no-gut call,” Foster said. “He was going to wave it off. Don’t ask me why he did. This is as devastating a loss as we could possibly have.” It was the second year in a row that Tech has beaten Houston in Lubbock on a controversial call at the buzzer. SMU regained the form it showed earlier in the year with the victory in Waco. “That’s the SMU team I ex pected to play after they played and almost beat North Carolina,” Baylor Coach Gene Iba said. rusher- the W- rush®? rdbyf : 24yar*l fame rterbadj TomM lined w'‘I ler ind KrJ keep this roll going, especially into the All-Star break and thereafter. I think the third quarter was the big one for us as we were able to handle the press and build a lead.” Spurs’ coach Bob Weiss said the Bucks “can really make you look like you are struggling.” “They take you out of what you want to do,” Weiss said. “Larry (Krystkowiak)and Mychal (Thomp son) have been playing well lately and Walter (Berry) had a really good offensive game in the second half. We’ve been doing a very good job on the boards and playing aggressive basketball.” Don Nelson, the Bucks’ coach, said his club had too many lapses on defense. “There were times when we played out of control and had a lot of defensive breakdowns,” Nelson said. “I knew the Spurs were playing well, and so did our team. The last two games our rebounding has been as bad as I’ve ever seen in my 11 years (coaching Milwaukee). We like our guards to go to the boards, but they didn’t do it today.” Blazers belt Mavs 133-117 PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Kiki Vandeweghe scored 38 points Sun day night, leading the Portland Trail Blazers to a 133-117 NBA victory over the Dallas Mavericks. The Trail Blazers, after leading 59-55 at halftime, broke the game open early in the fourth quarter. Vandeweghe put them ahead for good, 89-88, with 2:21 to play in the third quarter. The Blazers opened the fourth quarter with a 12-4 run to take a 107-96 lead with 7:34 left. Van deweghe scored 13 points in the fi nal quarter and Portland outre- bounded Dallas 16-7 in the period to claim the victory.
