Mets’ players get
1-year probation
HOUSTON (AP) — New York
Mets pitcher Ron Darling and in-
fielder Tim Teufel pleaded no con
test Monday to reduced misdemea
nor charges of resisting arrest
stemming from an altercation with
off-duty Houston police officers out
side a nightclub last summer.
Misdeameanor charges against
two other Mets baseball players,
pitchers Bob Ojeda and Rick Agui
lera, were dismissed as part of the
plea bargain arrangement, reached
after nearly 314 hours of discussions
Monday in a Harris County court.
Darling, 26, and Teufel, 28, were
fined $200 each and placed on one-
year probation. If both the players
successfully complete their proba
tion period, their records will be
cleared.
“I’m not unhappy I had to plead
out. I’m happy that it’s all over and
don’t have to worry about it any
more,” Darling said outside the
courthouse. “It wasn’t fair to my tea
mmates or the whole organizatiton
for all this to be happening. I’m glad
it’s over and the whole organization
can concentrate on baseball.
“I haven’t really been able to get
mentally ready for spring training
because of all this stuff going on
now. Now, I can concentrate on
baseball.”
Darling said he was unaware
about the plea bargaining until Mon
day morning.
Terms of the probation for Teu
fel and Darling were not released.

and attorneys, met with probation
officers following a brief court ap
pearance before State District Judge
Joe Kegans.
The judge did not lift a gag order
imposed in the case for attorneys, so
the two police officers involved in
the case could not comment.
The four players were arrested
July 19 following a confrontation
with off-duty police at Cooter’s
nightclub. Police said that the inci
dent began when Teufel left the
nightclub’s premises with an alco
holic drink, a violation of state law.
Ojeda, 29, and Aguilera, 25, were
arrested and charged with hindering
police apprehension, a misdemea
nor, by trying to help Darling and
Teufel avoid arrest. Darling and
Teufel were originally charged with
felony assault.
An aggravated assault charge car
ries a maximum penalty of 10 years
in prison and $5,000 in fines. The
misdemeanor charge carries a maxi
mum penalty of up to a year in jail
and $2,000 in fines.
Assistant District Attorney Bar
bara Cudros, who was to prosecute
the charges against Ojeda and Agui
lera, said the dropped charges were
“part of the agreement in the plea
bargain.”
She said the disposition of the case
was left to another district attorney,
Mike Anderson, who was handling
the felony matter.
When asked if he would go back
to Cooter’s, Darling said, “No, never
again. I’m watching a lot of TV in
Houston from now on.”
Abdul-Jabbar chosen
for NBA All-Star game
NEW YORK (AP) — Kareem Ab
dul-Jabbar of the Los Angeles
Lakers and six other players have
been selected by Western Confer
ence coaches to compete in the NBA
All-Star Game on Feb. 8 in Seattle,
the league announced Monday.
Also selected by the coaches were
center Joe Barry Carroll of Golden
State, forwards Mark Aguirre of
Dallas and Alex English of Denver,
and guards Rolando Blackman of
Dallas, Walter Davis of Phoenix and
Eric “Sleepy”'Floyd of Golden State.
They will join the Western Con
ference starters chosen by fans in
All-Star voting — center Akeem Ola-
juwon of Houston, forwards Ralph
Sampson of Houston and James
Worthy of the Lakers, and guards
Earvin “Magic” Johnson of the
Lakers and Alvin Robertson of San
Antonio.
It will be a record 16th All-Star
appearance for Abdul-Jabbar, the
NBA’s all-time leading scorer. Wilt
Chamberlain, Bob Cousy and John
Havlicek each played in 13 NBA All-
Star Games.
Simms’ career changed
after playing backup QB
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Call it
the turning point of Phil Simms’ ca
reer.
And no, it didn’t happen Sunday
in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena with a
record-setting passing performance
that carried the New York Giants to
a 39-20 Super Bowl victory over the
Denver Broncos.
It happened three years earlier,
when Scott Brunner beat him out
for the starting quarterback job with
the New York Giants, Simms said
Monday at a post Super Bowl news
conference.
“My biggest doubts were was I
ever going to play as well as I
thought I could,” Simms said. “I al
ways thought I could play well, but I
never was doing it. I was beginning
to wonder. It was never working
out.”
Injuries had kept him on the side
lines more often than not in his first
four seasons, but in 1983, it was
Brunner. And when Simms finally
did get in, he fractured a thumb.
The Giants eventually went 3-12-1
with Simms missing 14 games.
“It was probably the turning point
in my career because I don’t know if
I could have done anything,” Simms
Baylor upsets
UH by five
HOUSTON (AP) — Baylor center
Darryl Middleton scored 25 points
and guard Michael Williams fol
lowed with 24 as the Bears downed
Houston 67-62 in a Southwest Con
ference game Monday night.
Baylor improved to 10-7 overall
and 5-2 in the conference after win
ning four of its last five games.
Houston fell to 11-6 and 4-3 after
losing three of its last four.
Rickie Winslow led Houston with
21 points and 15 rebounds.
The 6-foot-2 Williams blocked a
shot, scored, then stole a pass and
started a Baylor surge for a 60-50
advantage with two minutes left in
the game. Baylor had opened the
second half on an 11-6 tear to take a
37-34 lead on six points from Wil
liams. The guard had 16 points in
the second half.
Winslow had 11 of Houston’s first
15 points.

said. “It was a terrible year. Every
thing went wrong, and you can’t
blame the quarterback or anybody.
It was a total team effort and we
failed.
“I probably was lucky not winning
the job, because at least I didn’t play
myself out of position,” the former
No. 1 draft pick said. “That’s what
Scott did. He played himself off the
team. If I would have been the start
ing quarterback I might have done
the same thing.”
In 1984, Simms was named the
No. 1 quarterback and the Giants
now have gone to three straight
playoffs. Much of that, Simms cred
its to better players and a radical
change in the offensive philosophy.
“I was working out at the stadium
that spring and he (Coach Bill Par-
cells) told me to work on nothing but
throwing 20-yard in cuts and 20-
yard out cuts. That’s Ron Erhardt’s
philosophy, and I think it’s the per
fect offense for me right now.”
On Sunday, it worked to perfec
tion against the Broncos. Simms hit
22 of 25 passes for 268 yards and
three touchdowns and guided the
New York offense to 30 second-half
points.
