Aggies to face tough challenge g

The Aggies’ situation is remi
niscent of the “bad news and
more bad news” scenario.
The bad news after Wednes
day night’s loss to Rice is obvious;
more bad news is the next stop on
Texas A&M’s schedule — Arkan
sas’ Barnhill Arena in Fayetteville
on Sunday.
The game will be televised by
Raycom (Channel 3) beginning at
1 p.m.
Aggie Head Coach Shelby Met
calf said Arkansas has better per
sonnel than Rice and are compa
rable to Houston in terms of
talent.
However, he said, the Razor-
backs have better depth and out
side shooting than the Cougars.
“We hope we play tough,” Met
calf said, “but then, we expected
to play Rice tough.”
He said he was not intimidated
by the infamous Barnhill Arena
crowd. He said they were noisy
but disorganized, compared with
the Texas A&M crowds that are
noisy and organized.
Aggie guard Darryl McDonald
said the Razorbacks are a great
team and that “we’re looking |
ward to beating them.” f aiim

Richardson's daughter dies of leukemia r,
TULSA, Okla. (AP) — The 15-
year-old daughter of University of
Arkansas basketball coach Nolan
Richardson died Thursday at a
Tulsa hospital nearly two years after
she was diagnosed as having leuke
mia, officials at St. Francis Hospital
said.
Richardson, former University of
Tulsa basketball coach, had taken a
leave of absence from his coaching
duties at Arkansas to be with his
daughter, Yvonne.
The girl died at 12:40 p.m., a hos
pital spokesman said.
“I’ve told him to do what he thinks
is best and that I’ll support him in
whatever he does,” Arkansas Ath
letic Director Frank Broyles said ear
lier this week. “He needs support
from everyone right now.”
The Richardson family was told in
March 1985 that Yvonne, then 13,
had leukemia.
Yvonne is the youngest of Rich
ardson’s four children. She had been
in and out of school with an undiag
nosed illness since December 1984.
Dr. Daniel C. Plunket, who had
treated Yvonne earlier for the dis
ease at St. Francis Hospital, said
Yvonne had the most common form
of leukemia among young teen-ag
ers.
Richardson missed some practices
for his University of Tulsa basketball
team at the end of the 1985 season.
“The most important thing in my
life is my family, and she is one of
the most important things,” he said
at the time.
“I don’t feel fear, and I don’t
think she does either,” Rida
said at the time. “I don’t b;
it is to quit, and I thinklhavn
that down to her, too. Sheiii
ter.”
