ATLANTA (AP) — No one ap
preciated the acrobatic display of the
varied ways to put a ball into the bas
ket more than Dominique Wilkins
and Michael Jordan, and they were
the guys putting on the show.
Jordan, who visited the Atlanta
Hawks locker room to salute Wilkins
after the game, said each impressed
the other as they exchanged dazzling
drives to the basket Wednesday
night.
“We’d give each other compli
ments,” the Chicago Bulls star said.
“We’d say, ‘Great move,’ or ‘Great
steal,’ or ‘Nice dunk.’”
Wilkins said his opponent was
“unbelievable. You’ve got to give
him his bows. I find myself watching
him sometimes, and I’m sure he
does the same.”
Wilkins scored 57 points for At
lanta night while Jordan had his
eighth straight 40-point plus for the
Bulls.
Wilkins hit 19 of 28 shots from the
field and 19 of 21 free throws as the
Hawks pounded the Bulls 123-95 in
their NBA game. Jordan scored 41
points on 15 of 25 field goal at
tempts and 11 of 12 free throws.
Wilkins, who tied his career high,
called the game “absolute fun. I
couldn’t have had more fun.”
“I’ve got nothing to prove scoring-
wise,” said the Hawks forward, who
led the league in scoring last year but
has conceded the honor this time to
Jordan. “Michael’s going to win it,
and more power to him. I’m differ
ent now. I pick my spots.”
And why did he pick Wednesday
night?
“It’s a competition thing. If I’d
shot 5-for-21 tonight, I’d have been
very disappointed. Michael’s such a
great athlete, he makes you want to
do well against him.”
“Dominique just came out firing,”
teammate Randy Wittman said. “He
was getting out on the break, he was
blocking shots to start the break, he
was getting open down low and they
weren’t double-teaming him. He was
unstoppable.”
Jordan’s streak of eight games
with at least 40 points is six short of
the NBA record. Wilt Chamberlain
had 14-game streaks of 40-point-
plus games in 1961 and 1962 with
the Philadelphia Warriors.

Carroll sparks Golden State
to win over Houston 411-104
HOUSTON (AP) — Joe Barry
Carroll scored six of his game-high
28 points in the last one minute and
40 seconds of the game to spark the
Golden State Warriors to a 111-104
win over the Houston Rockets
Thursday night.
After trailing the entire second
half, Houston scored eight straight
points to take a 102-100 lead with
4:13 left in the game. A basket by
Carroll tied the game, then the War
riors added six more points by Car-
roll and a three-point shot by Sleepy
Floyd to secure the win.
The victory snapped a three-game
losing streak for the Warriors, who
are 12-9. Floyd added 26 and Chris
Mullin 20 for the Warriors.
Houston, 8-11 and playing with
out all-star center Akeem Olajuwon
and starter Robert Reid, was led by
newly acquired Dirk Minniefield,
who had a career-high 20 points.
Steve Harris had 15 for the Rockets.
Golden State led 9-2, but Houston
battled back to a 16-16 tie after a
pair of Lewis Lloyd baskets. Lloyd
got a pair of baskets at the end of the
quarter to give Houston 28-26 lead.
The Rockets got a 38-34 lead be
fore the Warriors scored 10 points to
move ahead 44-38. Houston cut the
deficit to 56-54 at the half.
Mullin put in 10 points in the first
four minutes of the third quarter to
give the Warriors a 68-62 lead.
The Warriors went on to lead 88-
80 going into the fourth quarter.
Tech upsets Wyoming
LUBBOCK (AP) — Senior Guard
Mike Nelson scored 18 points and
junior forward Greg Crowe scored
17 Thursday night to power Texas
Tech to a 69-61 victory over 19th-
ranked Wyoming in a nonconfer
ence game.
Tech, which snapped a four-game
losing string with its second win of
the season, rallied around the three-
point shooting of Nelson to grab a
38-22 halftime lead.
The loss was the first in five games
for Wyoming.
Nelson hit all three of his three-
point tries to finish with 12 first-half
points as the Red Raiders raced away
from the rattled Cowboys.
The Raiders increased their lead
to 46-26 with 17 minutes and 30 sec
onds remaining in the game before
the Cowboys rallied behind the
three-point shooting of Fennis
Dembo, who led all scorers with 31
points.
Dembo hit three three-pointers
within 1:40 as Wyoming chiseled a
57-45 lead to 59-53 with 4 minutes
and 59 seconds remaining. Dembo
then got a pair of slam dunks to pull
Wyoming to within three points at
64-61 with 1 minute and 22 seconds
left to play.
Nelson countered for Tech with a
15-foot jump shot and Dwayne
Chism had a layup with eight sec
onds remaining to ice the victory.
Ninth-ranked Oklahoma
explodes past Texas 84-65
AUSTIN (AP) — No. 9 Okla
homa, led by 20 points by Darryl
Kennedy, broke open a close game
with nine minutes left to waltz away
with an 84-65 victory over Texas
Thursday night in a nationally tele
vised nonconference game.
Oklahoma, 4-1, led by eight
points, 54-46, with 9 minutes and 30
left to play. Over the next three min
utes, Kennedy and reserve forward
David Johnson combined for 11
points while Texas managed just
four, giving the Sooners a 65-50
lead.
Tim McCalister, Oklahoma’s lead
ing scorer with a 29-point per game
average, was held to just 15 points
on five of 15 shots.
Three other Sooners scored in
double figures: Harvey Grant with
16, Johnson, 13, and Ricky Grace,
12.
“I thought we played best at crit
ical times down the stretch in both
halves,” Sooner Head Coach Billy
Tubbs said. “Our defense forced
them away from the basket more
than they would have liked.
“We played the way they wanted
to for the first seven minutes and the
rest of the way the way we wanted
to,” he said.
“Texas definitely won the time of
possession. They had the ball about
30 minutes and we had it 10,” he
said.
Patrick Fairs led Texas with 16
points, followed by Raynard Davis
with 15 and Travis Mays with 14.
Davis scored six of Texas’ first 8
points helping the Longhorns jump
out to an 8-4 lead with 15:45 left.
The Sooners outscored Texas 10-
2 over the next three minutes
though to take the lead for good.
