Collier should see action
in last two Cowboy games!
IRVING (AP) — Third-string
quarterback Reggie Collier, a former
USFL standout, could see some ac
tion in the Dallas Cowboys’ last two
regular-season NFL games. Coach
Tom Landry said Tuesday.
“We still have a thread of hope of
getting into the playoffs,” Landry
said. “Funny things happen in this
business. But in the next two games
we need to look at some people who
will help us next year. Reggie Collier
will possibly move in some.”
The Cowboys, who have fallen to
a 7-7 record, must win their last two
games against Philadelphia and Chi
cago even to have a long shot for a
wild-card spot.
San Francisco would then have to
lose its last two games, while Minne
sota drops at least one of two.
“We still want to win games but we
could use Collier if the situation was
right,” Landry said.
Steve Pelluer has been ineffective
for the Cowboys as a replacement
for the injured Danny White.
“Steve’s not making good deci
sions,” Landry said. “He is frus
trated and I don’t know how bad his
conFidence has been hurt. I do think
he is strong enough to overcome it.”
Pelluer has suffered 14 intercep
tions and 39 sacks, while throwing
only five touchdown passes.
I-andry said. “We needtoemll
a winning note.”

The Cowboys, who have lost three
consecutive games for the first time
since 1979, are mired in their worst
slump in 21 years. The club, which
has lost five out of its last six, hasn’t
had a similar streak since losing five
in a row in 1965.
Also in jeopardy is the Cowboys’
record of 20 consecutive winning
seasons, the longest active streak in
professional sports.

Sea hawks’ win close to perfect
sed tl
SEATTLE (AP) — Drawing on
memories of all those games in his
14 seasons as a head coach in the
NFL, Chuck Knox of the Seattle Sea-
hawks says it’s “difficult to remem
ber when one went as well as that
one did.”
The Seahawks did everything
right and the Los Angeles Raiders
did everything wrong on a noisy
Monday night in the Kingdome —
and Seattle won 37-0.
The Raiders’ loss gave the AFC
West title to Denver, 10-4, and left
both Seattle and Los Angeles with 8-
6 records.
By winning before 62,923 scream
ing fans, the Seahawks stayed math
ematically alive in the playoff chase.
By losing, the Raiders, who were
shut out for the first time since 1981,
no longer can control their own des
tiny.
The Raiders and the Seahawks
trail Cincinnati, 9-5, in the battle to
nail down the AFC’s second wild
card berth. In order for the Sea
hawks to get into the playoffs, they
will have to beat San Diego and
Denver in their closing two games
and hope that the Raiders and Kan
sas City, also 8-6, each lose one and
that Cincinnati loses two.
“Our players just executed very
well and fought hard,” Knox said
Tuesday. “It’s a real tribute to them
that we could play as well as we did
against the Raiders without a Kenny
Easley, a Jeff Bryant and a Blair
Bush out there.
“Our team was sky high and the
crowd was really into the game. We
got an early lead and that kept our
crowd in the game.”
Written off for dead just three
games ago, the Seahawks had a
team-record 11 sacks against a trio
of Raiders’ quarterbacks — 39-year-
old Jim Plunkett, Marc Wilson and
Rusty Hilger.
Since losing four games in a row,
Seattle has won three straight and
Dave Krieg has been outstanding in
successive triumphs over Philadel
phia and the Raiders.
Against the Raiders, Krieg com
pleted 14 of 21 passes for 243 yards
and two touchdowns; a 12-yarder to
Raymond Butler and a 10-yarder to
Steve Largent. He wasn’t inter
cepted.
In contrast, the Raiders’ trio of
Plunkett, Wilson and Hilger was 13
for 29 for 166 yards and three inter
ceptions.
“Four or five weeks ago, we were
probably the worst team in the Na
tional Football League,” Seahawks’
running back Curt Warner said.
“But we’ve turned it around.”
Warner rushed for 1 16 yards and
two touchdowns on 23 carries.
“We have to look at ourselves as a
good football team,” nickel back

Reeves says Broncos
didn't back into title
DENVER (AP) — Broncos Coach
Dan Reeves says there will be no
apologies because his players won
the AFC West title in front of their
television sets, getting a timely assist
from the Seattle Seahawks.
“We didn’t back into the title,”
Reeves insisted Tuesday. “Anybody
who says that is overlooking the fact
that we’ve won 10 games, with a
chance to win 12, against one of the
toughest schedules in the league. We
didn’t play any pigeons. To clinch it,
we’ve had to do a lot of things right.”
Denver became the first AFC
team to clinch a playoff spot Monday
night when Seattle whipped the Los
Angeles Raiders 37-0. The Chicago
Bears, New York Giants and Wash
ington Redskins already have
clinched NFC berths.
The Raiders’ loss gave the division
championship to the Broncos for the
second time in three years. Denver,
at 10-4, has a two-game lead over
Seattle, Los Angeles and Kansas City
with two games left, and the Broncos

Trail Blazers
down Spurs
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Port
land’s Kiki Vandeweghe scored a
season-high 40 points to lead the
Trail Blazers to a 120-104 win
over the San Antonio Spurs
Tuesday night.
The win was Portland’s fifth in
a row and lifts it to 12-9. The loss
drops San Antonio to 6-13.
The Trail Blazers withstood a
second-half comeback by San An
tonio as the Spurs scored 11
straight points, cutting Portland’s
lead to 89-87 with eight minutes
left in the fourth period.
Vandeweghe countered for the
Blazers, scoring eight of the next
11 points as Portland pulled
ahead 98-93 and coasted from
there.
Former Spur Steve Johnson
scored 24 for Portland and Clyde
Drexler added 23. The Spurs’
Tyrone Corbin had 21, and My-
chal Thompson had 20.
The Blazers hit 55.5 percent of
their shots, connecting on 45 of
81, while San Antonio shot just
39.7 percent, hitting on 35 of 88.
In the third period, the Spurs
made only five of 22 attempts.
Winds cause trouble
for Heart of Americfl
FREMANTLE, Australia (AP) —
A cruel wind broke the Heart of
America syndicate Tuesday and
made the other races in the Ameri
ca’s Cup challenger series a battle for
survival.
Heart of America suffered all but
mathematical elimination as winds
of up to 34 knots blew out two of the
Chicago boat’s spinnakers and
washed a crew member overboard.
The stricken yacht, with Buddy
Melges at the helm, limped in 10
minutes, 10 seconds behind French
Kiss, skippered by Marc Pajot.
The victory strengthened the
French boat’s hold on second place
in the third and final round robin of
the challenger series. She has 19 vic
tories against 11 losses and has
earned 117 points.
The wind turned the Indian
Ocean course into a sea of whitecaps
and caused gear failure among both
the challenger fleet and the Austra
lians competing in the series to de
termine a defender.
John Kolius sailed America II
through an error-free race to defeat
Britain’s White Crusader by 1:47.
The victory gave the New York
Yacht Club entry a 24-6 record.
