Miami QB tops
All-America list
(AP) — The nation’s top runner
and No. 1 passer — Temple tailback
Paul Palmer and Miami of Florida
quarterback Vinny Testaverde —
were named Thursday to the Asso
ciated Press All-American football
team for 1986.
Miami and Oklahoma each put
three players on the elite squad.
Testaverde was joined by team
mates Jerome Brown, a defensive
tackle, and free safety Bennie
Blades, who led the nation with 10
interceptions.
Testaverde, who is expected to
win the Heisman Trophy on Satur
day, led Miami to a No. 1 ranking in
the AP poll for the last 10 weeks by
completing 175 of 276 passes for
2,557 yards and a nation-leading 26
touchdowns in 10 games. His com
pletion percentage was 63.4 and he
led the country in passing efficiency
but missed the final regular-season
contest with bruises suffered when
he fell off his motor scooter.
The 285-pound Brown was the
top lineman on a unit that finished
sixth nationally in total defense.
Oklahoma, the team Miami dis
placed as No. 1 after beating the
Sooners 28-16 on Sept. 27, is rep
resented by inside linebacker Brian
Bosworth, tight end Keith Jackson
and offensive guard Mark Hutson,
all juniors.
Bosworth is one of five repeaters
and nine juniors on the first team.
The other repeaters are offensive
guard Jeff Bregel of Southern Cali
fornia, defensive backs Thomas Ev
erett of Baylor and Mark Moore of
Oklahoma State and punter Barry
Helton of Colorado.
The other juniors besides Blades,
Helton and the Oklahoma trio are
wide receivers Tim Brown of Notre
Dame and Cris Carter of Ohio State,
defensive tackle A1 Noga of Hawaii
and inside linebacker Chris Spiel-
man of Ohio State.
The rest of the All-America team
consists of offensive tackles Harris
Barton of North Carolina and
Danny Villa of Arizona State, center
Ben Tamburello and running back
Brent Fullwood of Auburn, place-
kicker Jeff Jaeger of Washington,
outside linebackers Cornelius Ben
nett of Alabama and Shane Conlan
of Penn State, nose guard Danny
Noonan of Nebraska and defensive
back Rod Woodson of Purdue.
The AP All-America team will be
featured on Bob Hope’s Bagful of
Christmas Cheer on Dec. 21.
The team was selected by the AP’s
regional sports editors, along with
the college football editor and the
sports editor, from all-conference
and all-sectional lists.
Three 1985 first-teamers failed to
repeat. Michigan State tailback Lo
renzo White and LSU linebacker Mi
chael Brooks were hampered by in
juries. Texas A&M linebacker
Johnny Holland made the third
team.
Testaverde, who has started for
only two seasons, eclipsed Bernie
Kosar and became Miami’s all-time
passing leader with 6,058 yards. The
26 touchdown passes, and 48 for his
career, are Miami records.
Temple’s Palmer led the nation
with 1,866 rushing yards, an average
of 169.6 yards a game and 5.4 per
carry. He added 110 reception yards
and 657 on kickoff returns to finish
No. 1 in all-purpose running, as
well, with an average of 239.36 a
game.

braker had a 553 for second place in the men’s division. The University
of Texas took third and fourth.
On the women’s side, A&M’s Eugenia Algaze and Julie Burg

second. UT’s Jessica,Schuhmacher was third with a 499.
The team heads to the Southwest College Regional Championships

Rockets lose again
as Hawks roll, 109-93
HOUSTON (AP) — The Atlanta
Hawks seemed to have a strong re
server clause Thursday night in a
109-93 win over the Houston Rock
ets as Guard Mike McGee led a 52-
point bench effort with 18 points
and three steals.
Atlanta, 14-3, won its fourth
straight contest with a mixture of de
fense and depth, according to Mc
Gee.
“We’ve got 10 or 11 guys who can
play well,” said McGee, a guard in
his first season with the Hawks after
playing four years with the Los An
geles Lakers.
“Our game plan was to keep coin
ing at them and wear them down,”
McGee said. “When our starters
were tiring we knew we could count
on the reserves to play solid defense
that starts the fast break.”
Spud Webb, the 5-7 second year
backup guard, also played a big role.
He had nine assists and eight points
in the second half.
Forward Cliff Levingston added
to the second-string effort late in the
game with 10 of his 16 points when
the Rockets were challenging.
Atlanta’s Dominique Wilkins
grabbed 10 rebounds and had 14 of
his game-high 26 points in the first
half.
Houston, 7-9, lost its third straight
game.
Sonics rally to down Spurs
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Tom
Chambers scored 36 points to lead
the Seattle SuperSonics to 109-102
NBA victory over the San Antonio
Spurs Thursday night at the Hemis-
Fair Arena.
Seattle rallied from a six-point
deficit, 96-90, at the 3:55 mark as
Chambers and Dale Ellis teamed for
the last 19 points by the Sonics.
Chambers had 11, including one
three-pointer. Ellis had 8.
Seattle raised its record to 9-7. San
Antonio lost its fourth in a row to fall
to 5-12.
The Seattle win offset the efforts
of David Greenwood of the Spurs.
Greenwood pulled down a career-
high 22 rebounds and scored a sea
son-best 19 points.
The Spurs led by as many as eight
but Seattle charged back with a 10-
point outburst to pull ahead 41-40 in
the first half.
But guard Johnny Dawkins
picked up a loose ball, made a layup
and drew a foul from Chambers. He
made the shot to give the Spurs a 43-
41 halftime lead.
