ANP 50 15 YOUR CIGAR! y PERTH, Australia (AP) — Pope John Paul II lashed out at abortion as an “unspeakable crime” at his fi nal Mass in Australia on Sunday and reiterated the Roman Catholic church’s opposition to contraception and sterilization. “As the family goes, so goes the nation, and so goes the whole world in which we live,” he told 60,000 people during a service in this city on the Indian Ocean. “Can the pope come to Australia and fail to ask Australian couples and families to reflect in their hearts how well they are living their Chris tian love?” the pope said. Waldo by Kevin Thomas He said Catholics should consider whether government policies for de fending family values are appropri ate. “In a world that is becoming ever more sensitive to women’s rights, what is to be said of the rights of women who want to be or need to be full-time wives and mothers?” the pope said. The pontiff was nearing the end of a two-week tour of Asia and the Pacific. After a stop in the Sey chelles, he was to return to Rome to day. During his six days in Australia, he stressed traditional church teach ings, seeking to spell out what it means to be a Catholic and appeal ing to former Catholics to return to the church. John Paul, who last week cuddled a koala in Brisbane, finally got to see a kangaroo Sunday. He patted a gray one in a group brought to him in Adelaide before departing for Perth. The pope, wearing purple vest ments, celebrated his final Mass at a race track. Many in the crowd wore bush hats and blue souvenir baseball caps com memorating the papal visit. “The church’s well-known opposi tion to contraception and steriliza tion is not a position we arbitrarily lake,” he said. He emphasized the sanctity of hu man life, saying this was why the Sec ond Vatican Council “considers abortion an unspeakable crime.” It was the first time during his Australian tour that he directly re ferred to contraception and abor tion. JACKIE SHERRILL PRESENTS THE COTTON ROACH THAT ATE A THANKS6IV/WS TURKEY .STARRING JOHN HAGY RATED PG (pretty gullible) Reagan calls press irresponsible in handling of Iran controversy NEW YORK (AP) — President Reagan in an interview published Sunday called Lt. Col. Oliver North, who was fired last week, “a national hero,” and said the press must “take responsibility for what they have done” in revealing arms sales to Iran. The president was quoted by Time magazine as saying he had “a bitter bile in my throat these days” because of the controversy set off by disclosure of the sales. Although the outcome was disappointing, he said, “I don’t see anything I would have done differently.” The president referred to critics as “sharks, circling like they are now with blood in the water” and specif ically lambasted the news media. “What is driving me up the wall is that this wasn’t a failure until the press got a tip from that rag in Bei rut and began to play it up,” the magazine quoted Reagan as saying. “I told them that publicity could de stroy this, that it could get people killed. They then went right on.” The U.S. connection to Iranian arms sales first was revealed by Al- Shiraa, a pro-Syrian Lebanese mag azine, on Nov. 4, Election Day in the United States. Reagan said he did not know that profits from the arms sales were being channeled to rebels fighting Nicaragua’s Sandinista gov ernment until Attorney General Ed win Meese began an investigation. Poindexter, Reagan said, followed Navy tradition by taking responsibil ity “even if you are asleep in your bunk when your ship runs ag round.” “Lt. Col. North was involved in all our operations: the Achille Lauro, Libya,” Reagan said. “He has a fine record. He is a national hero. My only criticism is that I was not told everything.” Reagan said Meese briefed him last Monday, and he decided to re lease the results of the probe imme diately. National Security Adviser John Poindexter resigned on Tues day and North, a Marine officer who worked for Poindexter, was fired. Reagan said Meese’s investigation is proceeding. The president said the Iranians approached the United States, say ing they were trying to “do some thing” about terrorism. “We said that if they were really sincere, then they could show us by getting the hostages released,” Reagan said. “We got three people (hostages) back,” he said. “We were expecting any day to get two others. The press has to take the xesponsibility for what they have done.” MCDONALD’S INTRAMURAL HIGHLIGHTS DRIVE-THRU SERVICE University Drive Hwy 21 Texas and S.W.
