A’s Canesco wins
AL rookie of year
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Oak
land A’s outfielder Jose Canseco,
whose long, high-arcing homers
brought predictions he will someday
challenge the records of baseball’s
greatest sluggers, was named Tues
day the American League Rookie of
the Year.
The powerfully built, 22-year-old,
who says he was “just scratching the
surface” of his talent after hitting 33
homers and driving in 117 runs,
edged California Angels first base-
man Wally Joyner for the honor.
Canseco received 16 of 28 first-
place votes and 110 points to 12
first-place votes and 98 points for
Joyner. Two writers from each of
the league’s 14 cities participated in
the selection for the Baseball Writers
Association of America.
Toronto Blue Jays reliever Mark
Eichhorn finished third with 23
points on a 5-3-1 basis, while out
fielder Cory Snyder of the Cleveland
Indians totaled 16. Danny Tartabull
of the Seattle Mariners wound up
with four points and Ruben Sierra of
the Texas Rangers got one.
Canesco said he didn’t set any
goals this season other than learning
about the pitchers in the league, but
has several goals for next year.
“I’d like to hit over 40 home runs,
drive in over 130 runs and hit about
.280,” he said. “I also want to im
prove my defense. I made quite a
few errors this year. As a second
year player, I should be able to im
prove on everything.”
Though he hit just .240, Canseco
tied for fourth in the league in home
runs and was second in RBI to
Cleveland’s Joe Carter, who had
121. Canseco led the league in
strikeouts, however, fanning 175
times.

account for the Contras, and Adolfo
Calero, a Contra leader, withdrew
the money.
In Miami, a top Contra leader
flatly denied the assertions by Meese
that the Contras have received be
tween $10 million and $30 million
from the sale of U.S. arms to Iran.
“We know absolutely nothing
about the money that has been re
ferred to today,” said Adolfo Calero,
leader of the Nicaraguan Demo
cratic Force, the largest Contra
army.
Calero, a leader of the umbrella
group United Nicaraguan Opposi
tion, said that during 1986 the Con
tras had received only “a trickle of
money,” estimating it at $300,000 to
$500,000 in addition to humanita
rian aid approved by Congress. And
he denied that he and North had
ever discussed money matters.
Vice President George Bush was
described by his spokesman, Marlin
Fitzwater, as very disturbed about
the disclosures.
“(Bush) feels we need to get on
very quickly with the Meese investi
gation and the review of the Na
tional Security Council staff,” Fitz
water said.
“The vice president feels we need
absolute integrity in the decision
making process. . . . This cannot be
allowed to happen again,” the
spokesman added.
There were these related devel
opments:
• Several members of Congress,
in both the Democratic and Republi
can parties, expressed shock over
the latest developments and called
for the appointment of a special
prosecutor to determine whether
the Reagan administration broke the
law.
• Alton G. Keel Jr., a veteran
government official who joined the
staff of the National Security Coun
cil four months ago, was named to
the agency’s top staff job on an act
ing basis to succeed Poindexter.
• Secretary of State George
Shultz declared that he intends to
stay on the job and pursue in every
way possible Reagan’s foreign policy
objectives, including a better
relationship with Iran.
“I feel quite privileged to be asso
ciated with him in this endeavor,”
Shultz said in an apparent effort to
end speculation that he might step
down in disagreement with Reagan
over the U.S. sale of arms to Iran.
• Former national security ad
viser Robert C. McFarlane, in Lon
don addressing a Jewish group, ex
pressed surprise at Poindexter’s
resignation.
“We’re very old friends and I’m
astonished by the resignation,” the
former national security adviser told
a reporter. “But I’m not prepared to
say any more until I have all the
facts.”

gets a chance to multiply and create
the toxin.
Russell says people preparing
food should wash their hands and
utensils frequently since bacteria can
be passed from meat or poultry to
other foods by way of knives or cut
ting boards or, in the case of staphy
lococcus, by people.
“Staphylococcus comes from the
people themselves,” he says. “It’s on
oui hands, in our nose, in our hair.
It originates from man.”
Russell says proper storage and
handling of food is particularly im
portant because there is no visible
evidence of contamination.
