But she said that she doesn’t think
the redpots, who are in charge of the
bonfire, condone this type of behav
ior.
While Weaver suffered cuts and
bruises, she says the injuries are not
what hurt her the most.
“What hurts me the most is that
absolutely nobody came to help me,”
she said. “In fact, they thought it was
‘good bull’ that I was abused.
“I’m not condemning bonfire be
cause I think it’s a great tradition.
But the attitude of ‘We’re gonna
build this great bonfire for Aggie
spirit, but we’re gonna beat Aggies
while we do it ’ has to go.
“I don’t think any less of the tradi
tion of the bonfire, but I have to
wonder about some of the people
who work on it, especially if they do
this.”
Weaver said she will be going back
out to bonfire after she recuperates
from the events of the last few days.
But, she said, she will never again go
alone.
William Kibler, associate director
of student affairs and adviser for
bonfire, said Thursday that women
are not prevented from working on
the bonfire stack.
“There is absolutely nothing
keeping women from working on
stack,” Kibler said. “Working on
stack is regarded as a kind of priv
ilege by the people who work on the
bonfire. Bonfire requires a lot of
very physical work, and if a woman
is willing to do the same work as a
male, then she should be allowed to
work on the stack.”
