Khomeini says no
to reconciliation
with Washington
NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — Iran’s
revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ru-
hollah Khomeini on Thursday ruled
out reconciliation with Washington
and said any Iranian officials who
seek to improve relations are “Satan-
oriented.”
“I never expected such things
from these people,” Khomeini, 86,
said in a speech at his residence in
north Tehran. His remarks were
broadcast by Tehran radio and mon
itored in Nicosia.
“This is a time when they should
be screaming at America. (But) they
are shouting at themselves,” Kho
meini said in his first public com
ment on contacts between Washing
ton and Tehran.
Without mentioning names, Kho
meini criticized Iranian leaders who
publicly have demonstrated flexibil
ity towards the United States in re
cent weeks. He accused them of fall
ing prey to propaganda from the
White House, which he called the
“Black House.”
President Reagan disclosed last
week that the United States had se
cret diplomatic contacts with Iran
over the past 18 months and deliv
ered small amounts of defensive
weapons in a bid to improve rela
tions.
Several Iranian leaders, including
Parliament speaker Hashemi Raf-
sanjani, have spoken of possible rec
onciliation with the United States,
but they have stipulated that Wash
ington first must meet certain condi
tions, such as releasing weapons
bought by the Shah’s government
but never delivered. The Shah was
ousted during the 1979 revolution.
Khomeini, who has the final say in
Iran’s affairs, responded, “What has
come upon you? Where are you
going?”
The radio said he was referring to
an unidentified group of lawmakers
who submitted a letter to Iran’s par
liament, the Majlis. The broadcast
did not disclose the letter’s contents,
but it apparently urged some dia
logue- between Washington and
Tehran.
Khomeini said Reagan’s remarks
last week on contacts with Iran were
full of “contradictions, agitation and
horror.” He did not elaborate.
He reiterated Iranian denials of
Reagan’s statement that former U.S.
national security adviser Robert Mc-
Farlane talked with Iranian officials
during a secret visit to Tehran.
Khomeini spoke for nearly 20
minutes. He was addressing a group
of military officials and relatives of
fighters killed in Iran’s 6-year-old
war against Iraq.

UN condemns attack
of U.S. on Libyan cities • Knee
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The
General Assembly voted 79-28
Thursday to condemn last April’s
U.S. bombing raids on Libya as a vio
lation of international law.
There were 33 abstentions on the
resolution, which was sponsored by
27 countries, mostly Arab and Soviet
Bloc states.
In addition to condemning the
April 15 U.S. bombing raids on Tri
poli and Benghazim, the resolution
called on the United States to refrain
from using or threatening to use
force against Libya.
It also said Libya has the right to
appropriate compensation for the
material and human losses inflicted.
Libyan Ambassador Ali Abdessa-
lam Treiki welcomed the vote.
“This gives us hope and raises our
confidence of the United Nations,”
he said, attributing opposition to res
olution to the “might of the dollar.”
Treiki said adoption of the resolu
tion proves false all the charges
made by the United States, which ac
cused Libya of involvement in inter
national terrorism.
Treiki reiterated that Libya op
poses terrorism.
The Libyan ambassador accused
the United States of commiting bla
tantly hostile acts against Libya since
his country closed U.S. bases and
took control of its oil resources after
the 1969 revolution which brought
Col. Moammar Gadhafi to power.
Responding for the United States
on Wednesday, Sen. Larry Pressler
told the assembly the U.S. raids were
carried out in legitimate self-de
fense.
