Wacker says beating AM could ease tough season By Homer Jacobs Assistant Sports Editor Texas Christian Head Coach Jim Wacker said in a telephone hookup Tuesday that he would like to win Saturday’s game against Texas A&M more than any other Southwest Con ference game for many reasons. First, Wacker pointed to the fact that A&M was the frontrunner in the SWC, and a win against the Ag gies could only help recruiting and off-season attitudes for the Horned Frogs. But much has been written and said about the “bad blood†that exists between Wacker and A&M Coach Jackie Sherrill. In last year’s 53-6 A&M victory, an apparent onside kick by the Ag gies, who were leading TCU 46-0, helped fuel the fire between the two schools and the two coaches. Wacker said he believes the kick was an onside attempt, but said the controversial play has not surfaced in any conversations between him and his players. Sherrill said the play was not an onside kick at his press conference Tuesday. “When we kick an onside kick,†Sherrill said, “the ball will be kicked 10 yards across the field, at an angle, with everybody on that side going af ter the ball.†The kick at TCU was high and traveled much farther than the usual onside attempt. Wacker also may want the win against A&M to silence critics who have doubted his team’s perfor mance this season. Sherrill has said TCU might have the most talent in the conference despite the Frogs’ dismal 1-6 conference record. Wacker said his team’s injury problems have caused most of TCU’s woes, not underachievement by his players. “I’d like Coach Sherrill to take three of his top players and three top defensive players and redshirt them,†Wacker said. “Take (Kevin) Murray out of the lineup, take all of his starting (running) backs out of the lineup, a couple of his top receiv- SWC Football Conference All Gomes W L T Pts OP W L T Pts CftetM Texas A&M 5 1 0 189 104 7 2 0 270 ft gati Baylor 5 2 0 203 133 7 3 0 286 P SMU 5 2 0 185 121 6 4 0 245 2>< Boc Arkansas 5 2 0 165 114 8 2 0 262 i F ori Il«, Texas 4 2 0 154 108 5 4 0 213 r* Ine ^ I’m Texas Tech 4 3 0 154 166 6 4 0 220 TCU 1 6 0 146 225 3 7 0 249 x;L Rice 1 6 0 116 255 2 7 0 150 ^ mal Houston 0 6 0 60 146 1 8 0 105 1 of I Saturday's Games nev dec goe Texas Christian at Texas A&M Houston at Texas Tech ers out of the lineup and take out about 1 1 kids out with injuries and three of the other top players, (and) find out how many games A&M would have won this last year.
