Wacker says beating AM
could ease tough season
By Homer Jacobs
Assistant Sports Editor
Texas Christian Head Coach Jim
Wacker said in a telephone hookup
Tuesday that he would like to win
Saturday’s game against Texas A&M
more than any other Southwest Con
ference game for many reasons.
First, Wacker pointed to the fact
that A&M was the frontrunner in
the SWC, and a win against the Ag
gies could only help recruiting and
off-season attitudes for the Horned
Frogs.
But much has been written and
said about the “bad blood” that exists
between Wacker and A&M Coach
Jackie Sherrill.
In last year’s 53-6 A&M victory,
an apparent onside kick by the Ag
gies, who were leading TCU 46-0,
helped fuel the fire between the two
schools and the two coaches.
Wacker said he believes the kick
was an onside attempt, but said the
controversial play has not surfaced
in any conversations between him
and his players.
Sherrill said the play was not an
onside kick at his press conference
Tuesday.
“When we kick an onside kick,”
Sherrill said, “the ball will be kicked
10 yards across the field, at an angle,
with everybody on that side going af
ter the ball.”
The kick at TCU was high and
traveled much farther than the usual
onside attempt.
Wacker also may want the win
against A&M to silence critics who
have doubted his team’s perfor
mance this season. Sherrill has said
TCU might have the most talent in
the conference despite the Frogs’
dismal 1-6 conference record.
Wacker said his team’s injury
problems have caused most of
TCU’s woes, not underachievement
by his players.
“I’d like Coach Sherrill to take
three of his top players and three
top defensive players and redshirt
them,” Wacker said. “Take (Kevin)
Murray out of the lineup, take all of
his starting (running) backs out of
the lineup, a couple of his top receiv-

kind of easy to pop off about the tal

Sherrill said everyone, including
coaches, will have different opinions
and philosophies, especially in a con
ference with eight member schools
in one state.
“I don’t have time to talk about
people,” Sherrill said. “If people
have a problem with us, that’s their
problem, not our problem.”
On the field, the Horned Frogs
are 23-point underdogs, and
Wacker said a maximum effort by
his players is necessary for a possible
upset.
“The kids are going to have to
heal up,” Wacker said. “And ob
viously we’re going to have to play
better than we have in any ball game
the last two years.
