Ag women nelters
take thirds at Rice
The Texas A&M women’s tennis
team notched two third places in the
Rice Invitational on Sunday.
At No. 4 singles, A&M’s Cindy
Crawford defeated the University of
Houston’s Fran Ind, 6-3, 7-6, and
Missy Kibler beat Kathy O’Tool of
Baylor 6-0; 6-7, 6-3 in No. 6 singles.
A&M’s other third-place entrant,
Laura Liong, lost to Lisa Perman-
tuan of Southern Methodist, 0-6, 1-6
in her No. 3 singles match.
Crawford beat Rice’s Megan Tan
ner 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in her opener, but
lost to Debbie Vanderslice 6-3, 6-2 in
the semifinals. Kibler opened with a
win over Furman’s Gwen Earle 6-1,

Christensen 6-1,6-2.
Liong bested Karen Kelly of Fur

On Saturday, Liong and Craw

“Overall, we did fairly well consid

Kleinecke said. “So that was good,
plus nobody else got huii't.
Crawford, Liong and Kibler were
the Aggies’ only entrants in the tour
nament because the rest of team is

Terry Labonte won for the second
year in a row at the l()th Annual
Texas Race of Champions at Texas
World Speedway Sunday.
Labonte, who notched his third
Texas Race of Champions title, fin
ished ahead of fellow Corpus Christi
native Rick Rapp. Greg Davidson of
Houston grabbed third.
“The car just ran super,” Labonte
said. “It couldn’t have gone any bet
ter.
“We were uncertain about how
the car would run before the race.
Since the prelims were rained out,
we had to start by the order the en
tries were received. So we started
about 25th . . . I’m just really tickled
to win this one.”
Bobby Allison, who finished sec
ond last year, had to remain in Nash
ville, Term., to finish a rain-delayed
race. His son Davey drove in his
place, but dropped out of the race
with engine problems.
In the Texas International Driv
ers Association race, College Sta
tion’s Aaron Simon finished second.
He had held the lead until his engine
sputtered on the last lap, which al
lowed Joe Osburne of San Antonio
to grab the victory.
In the two super stock car races,
Larry Benedle of San Antonio and
Jerry Grant on Austin won their re
spective races. Wayne Strout of Dal
las finished first in the Formula Ford
race and Michael Clem won the For
mula Vee race.
Scot Grissom, the son of late astro
naut Virgil Grissom, won the show
room stock car race. In the newly
added sports Renault race, Ted
Smith of Austin grabbed the victory.

Oilers edge Bengals
to break losing streak
HOUSTON (AP) — Houston’s
Warren Moon and Drew Hill un
locked a seldom-used passing attack,
and the Oilers held off a second half
Cincinnati rally for a 32-28 NFL vic
tory Sunday to end an eight-game
losing streak.
Bengal quarterback Boomer Esia-
son, benched at the start of the third
quarter, came back late in the period
and rallied Cincinnati from a 29-7
deficit with three touchdown passes.
But Moon and Hill ended the
Bengal comeback by combining on a
45-yard pass play to the Cincinnati
28 with 2:27 to play.
Esiason threw touchdown passes
of 39 and 8 yards to James Brooks
and 5 yards to tackle Anthony Mu
noz on a tackle eligible play.
Trailing 29-28, the Bengals got
their chance to win with 6:18 left in
the game when rookie Ray Wallace
fumbled and Cincinnati’s David
Fulcher recovered at Houston’s 36.
But Cincinnati lost possession on
fourth down with 4:24 left to play.
Moon, who completed 25 of 44
passses for 310 yards, hit his first
seven passes of the game and ignited
the Oilers to a 19-0 halftime lead.
Moon’s 5-yafd pass to tight end Ja
mie Williams, field goals of 42 and
25 yards by Tony Zendejas and Wal
lace’s 1-yard run provided Hous
ton’s first-half points.
Zendejas added his third field
goal, a 46-yarder, with 26 seconds
left in the game.
Cincinnati’s Ken Anderson
started the second half at quar
terback and rallied the Bengals with
a 29-yard touchdown pass to Larry
Kinnebrew.
Wallace scored a second touch
down on a 1-yard run in the third
quarter when safety Jeff Donaldson
intercepted a pass by Anderson at
the Bengal 1 1.
Raiders rally past Cowboys
IRVING (AP) — Jim Plunkett
came off the bench to throw two
touchdown passes to Dokie Williams
in the second half Sunday, rallying
the Los Angeles Raiders to a 17-13
NFL victory over the Dallas Cow
boys.
The Raiders, who intercepted
Dallas quarterback Steve Pelluer five
times and sacked him on seven occa
sions, improved their record to 6-4
in the AFC West. The Cowboys
dropped to 6-4 in the NFC East.
The 38-year-old Plunkett, who re
placed an ineffective Marc Wilson
after halftime, tied the game 10-all
in the third period. He flipped a 20-
yard scoring pass to Williams after
linebacker Jerry Robinson’s inter
ception of Pelluer at the Dallas 23.
With Dallas leading 13-10 early in
the fourth period after Rafael Sep-
tien’s 20-yard field goal, Plunkett hit
Williams with a 40-yard scoring pass
after Vann McElroy’s second inter
ception of the game.
Dallas led 10-3 at halftime with
both the Raiders’ Wilson and Pelluer
suffering three interceptions each.
The Cowboys had two apparent
touchdowns called back by penalties.
Ron Fellows’ interception of Wil
son at the Raider 32 led to Dorsett’s
13-yard touchdown run which gave
Dallas the lead after a tradeoff of
field goals.
Dorsett passed O.J. Simpson in
the fifth spot on the NFL’s all-time
rushing list.
Dorsett rushed 22 times for 101
yards Sunday, for a total of 11,282
yards to 11,136 for Simpson.
