Loss leaves A&M
with 20-8 record
By Homer Jacobs
Assistant Sports Editor
The 18th-ranked Texas A&M
Aggies, coming off a weekend road
trip in Kentucky, were hungry for
some home cooking at G. Rollie
White Coliseum Monday night.
The feast would hopefully be the
University of Texas at Arlington.
Instead, the home cooking
turned sour as UTA dominated the
Aggies 15-10, 15-11 and 15-3.
The match left the Aggies with a
20-8 record and probably just an
outside chance of gaining an at-
large bid to the NCAA tournament.
“We’ve been struggling ever
since we lost to Rice,” A&M Coach
A1 Givens said.
The Aggies looked tired and
struggled throughout the match
against a smooth, consistent UTA
team that was playing at the top of
its game.
“A little bit I think was fatigue,”
Givens said. “But I don’t think that
was the reason we lost. We just got
beat.
“Give them credit. They played
extremley well.”
The Aggies had a sub-par hitting
percentage of .163 compared to the
Lady Mavs’ .260. And A&M could
only muster 34 team digs on the de
fensive side, while UTA posted 63.
"They probably beat us in every
category,’ Givens said. “Today,
they were better than us.”
UTA coach Lisa Love echoed
Givens’ remarks.
“We had to play 100 percent to
beat them,” she said. “It happened
to be our night.”
A&M middle blocker Margaret
Spence was the only real bright spot
for the Aggies as she finished the
match with 10 kills and eight digs.
Although the match was not a
Southwest Conference affair, the
outcome should affect the seeding
in the NCAA South Region, where
A&M was ranked No. 2 and UTA
No. 4.
Givens said his squad is still in the
running for a bid to the NCAA
tournament if the Aggies can get on
a winning streak beginning with
Rice at Houston on Wednesday.
“We’ve got to regroup and defi
nitely put it to Rice," he said. “We
still have four ranked teams to play,
also.”
A&M will face 17th-ranked Pep-
perdine Friday and 19th-ranked
Arizona Saturday in G. Rollie
White Coliseum.
