Barton predicting victory over Geren in Nov. 4 election By Rodney Rather Staff Writer U.S. Rep. Joe Barton on Friday held what he termed his “first offi cial press conference” in his cam paign against Democratic opponent Pete Geren. Barton said he has waited until the past two weeks to concentrate on the 6th District congressional race because he’s been busy voting on leg islative issues and representing his constituents. Despite the lack of time he has spent personally on the campaign, however, Barton predicted he will emerge victorious Tuesday with 55 percent to 62 percent of the vote. “I have consistently worked to help Brazos County and all the 6th District on local projects,” Barton told reporters at Easterwood Air port. Using the airport as an example of his local accomplishments, Barton said he has directed almost $1.5 mil lion to Easterwood for im provements that will attract new in dustries and create new jobs. Drawing a contrast between him self and Geren, Barton said he is “a man of the people” educated in pub lic schools, whereas Geren comes from an elitist background. “I’ve actually got a proven record of performance (in Congress) where his is basically promises about what he would do,” Barton added. Barton also said he is running a positive advertising campaign while Geren is using negative advertising tactics because he can’t talk about substantial issues. “Most of the negative attack ads my opponent is running are just an act of desperation,” Barton said. Hobby, Mattox enjoying substantial political leads Associated Press Lt. Gov. Bill Hobby and Attorney General Jim Mattox hold substantial leads over their Republican chal lengers, according to polls con ducted for several news organiza tions. Hobby has widened his lead over political newcomer David Davidson, an Austin preacher. Mattox still holds a considerable lead over State District Judge Roy Barrera Jr., the polls report. A poll conducted by the Houston Chronicle and KTRK-TV inter viewed 665 registered voters likely to cast ballots Tuesday. The poll was conducted by the University of Houston Public Affairs Research Center. A similar poll was conducted by the Gallup Poll for The Houston Post, The Dallas Morning News, KXAS-TV in Fort Worth, KSAT- TV in San Antonio, KPRC-TV in Houston and KVUE-TV in Austin. The Gallup poll did not include the lieutenant governor’s race. The Houston Chronicle- KTR K poll shows Hobby with 62 percent of the vote to Davidson’s 23 percent, with 14 percent undecided. The margin of error is plus or minus 4 percentage points. The percentages do not total 100 because of rounding off of figures. In the September poll, Hobby had 59 percent to Davidson’s 20 percent, with the remainder undecided. “Hobby is going to win by an over whelming margin,” said Richard Murray, the Houston political scien tist who conducted the poll. In the current poll, Mattox had 52 percent to Barrera’s 38 percent, with 10 per cent undecided. In the Gallup Poll, Mattox was fa vored by 56 percent of the surveyed likely voters. Barrera was the choice of 35 percent and 9 percent were undecided. On a different note, the first His panic candidate fielded by the Dem ocrats is doing better in his race for the Texas Supreme Court, the poll indicated. Incumbent Raul Gonzalez now leads his opponent, Republican John Bates 37 percent to 32 percent with the remainder undecided. •Aerobics- Hydra Fitness Equipment-Tanning OFFER ENDS NOV. 9 846-1013 1003 University Driv^ POLITICAL FORUM A Panorama of Republican Perspectives on Issues Facing the State of Texas Featuring Vice President George Former Governor Bill Senator Phil Representative Joe BUSH CLEMENTS GRAMM BARTON Monday Nov. 3 2:30 pm Rudder Auditorium No Backpacks Please No Admission Charged zHsTnemonied Student Centen.
