(AP) — New York’s Joe Morris ran for 181 yards and two touchdowns, and the New York defense controlled the Cowboys’ 30-point-a-game offense as the Giants beat the Cowboys 17-14 Sunday. Morris, who ran for an 8-yard touchdown in the second quarter and a 6-yarder in the fourth, was vir tually the entire New York offense as the Giants improved to 7-2 in the NFC East and dropped the Cowboys to 6-3. The teams entered this critical NFC game tied for first in the divi sion with the Washington Redskins, who sneaked past Minnesota 44-38 in overtime. The New York defense, led by outside linebackers Carl Banks and Lawrence Taylor, didn’t shut down Dallas. But it sacked Danny White, who later went out with a broken wrist, and Steve Pelluer, who re placed White, six times and made the key plays when it had to, includ ing a 14-yard sack by George Martin that took Dallas out of field-goal range in the final minute. White’s wrist was broken 10 minutes into the game after a sack by Banks. The in jury will put White out for at least six weeks. New York took a 10-7 lead in a first half despite turning the ball over three times. And the third pe riod was scoreless despite almost to tal control by the Cowboys —theGi ants gained just 10 yards in 11 plays during the period. But things picked up in the fourth quarter. The Cowboys then drove 90 yards in just eight plays. Tony Dorsettran a draw play in from 23 yards outto make it 17-14 with 7:29 left. Thekes play in that drive was a 39-yard com pletion from Pelluer to Herschd Walker, who made the catch despitt a fierce hit from Terry Kinard Walker bounced off Kinard and ran for 15 more yards. Dallas later attempted to tie it up with a 63-yard field goal by Rafael Septien, but it fell way short with, only 13 seconds left. Y' h Dolphins rip hapless Oilers 28-7 MIAMI (AP) — Dan Marino threw four touchdown passes, three in a 4:29 span in the second period, as the Miami Dolphins whipped the Houston Oilers 28-7 Sunday. Marino’s scoring tosses covered eight, 38, three and 85 yards as the Dolphins, 4-5, won consecutive games for the first time this year. Marino finished with 12 completions in 29 attempts for 220 yards with two interceptions. The Oilers dropped to 1-8 with their eighth straight loss. An interception and 36-yard re turn by safety Donovan Rose three plays later set up a 3-yard scoring pass from Marino to Tony Nathan 39 seconds before halftime. The Dolphins scored again on their first second-half possession when Mark Duper snared a short pass over the middle and turned it into an 85-yard touchdown. The Oilers moved 50 yards in seven plays after an interception by Richard Johnson for their only score. Mike Rozier scored on a 1- yard touchdown run with 12:46 to play. On the second play of the next Miami possession, Davenport ripped off right tackle for 25 yards, the longest run from scrimmage for the Dolphins this year. Two plays later, Marino drilled one over the middle to Moore, who caught the ball at the 15 and side-stepped two defenders to get to the end zone. Oilers starting quarterback War ren Moon was yanked from the lineup to start the second half, but backup Oliver Luck also had trouble creating much offense against the unusually strong Miami defense. Luck was 9-of-19 for 119 yards, and Moon was 5-of-8 for 45 yards. Both threw one interception. The Oilers suffered two majorim juries. Defensive back Bo Eason and wide receiver Ernest Givins had to be taken off the field on stretchers Eason with a knee injury and Givins with a neck problem. Why did he say that the state should raise tuition, because it would only cost students “half a coke a day”?
