him. The water was up to her shoul
ders.
“You’re not ready yet,” she said.
“I’m as ready as I’ll ever be,” he re
plied. He was knee-deep in the water
and pushing forward.
“Suit yourself,” Samantha said,
then her head disappeared beneath
the surface of the lake.
At the same time, the water that
Steve was sloshing through turned
from black to bright blue. He stopped,
waiting for something to happen, his
eyes moving from side to side. Finally,
he turned around and looked back at
the lakeshore.
He was quite a ways out into the
lake, but was still only waist-deep in
water. The lakeshore was quiet, the
trees illuminated by the last rays of the
setting sun, the sky growing dark from
the top down, leaving a small band of
light just above the treeline. Steve was
about to turn back around and re
sume his hike out into the lake when
he heard a familiar popping sound.
He watched as a rectangular blue
hole began to glow in the middle of
the sky just above the treeline. The
blurry face of a young woman floated
on the rectangle, then popped into fo
cus.
“Hello, Steve,” Samantha said.
Steve looked up into the sky, his
eyes narrowing as he silently cursed.
“Now can you get me out of here?”
he asked.
“Well, not exactly,” she said.
Steve rolled his eyes. “Not exact
ly!” he shouted. “What do you mean,
not exactly?”
“I can help you, but I can’t get you
out,” she replied.. “You have to do
that yourself. ” She moved back, and
Steve could see that she was in his liv
ing room.
She sat in his easy chair, looked
straight at him and sighed.
“In order for you to get out of there,
you have to do the same thing that I
just did to you to someone else,” she
said. “In order for you to do that, you
have to get the power that I was talk
ing about just before I left you. ”
“How do I do that?” Steve asked.
“By not trying to get it,” Samantha
replied. “You just have to be patient
and it will come to you.
“When it does,” she continued,
“you then have to find somebody and
get them to come to that place you’re
in. Then you have to walk through the
lake. As you may have guessed, I’m
on the other side. ”
Steve needed to sit down, so began
to walk back to the shore. “Will I be
here long?” he asked.
“That depends on you,” she an
swered. “It takes a lot of patience to
get out. You’ll probably be there for
awhile. ”
Steve reached the shore and sat
down wearily. He reached absent-
mindedly in his shirt pocket for a ciga
rette, but the pocket was empty. Then
he closed his eyes as he realized that
the pack and his lighter were sitting on
the table beside his chair. Under nor
mal circumstances, he would have
had a pounding migraine by now, but
his head was clear.
He opened his eyes and stared at
Samantha, then dropped his gaze to
the table beside his chair. Samantha
followed his gaze to the table beside
her.
“You really ought to quit, you
know,” she said as she picked up the
cigarette pack and lighter.
“Believe me, this is an especially
bad time to be saying that,” Steve re
plied.
Samantha giggled, then threw the
cigarettes and the lighter at the screen.
Steve watched as they came toward
the hole in the sky, growing bigger as
they approached. There was a crack
ling, hissing sound, then the cigarettes
and lighter landed beside him. He
pulled a cigarette from the pack, lit it,
and took a deep drag.
“Make ’em last,” Samantha said.
Then she picked up the remote con
trol and turned the TV off.
And Steve watched as the hole in
the sky disappeared.
