For Texas A&M swim ming coach Mel Nash, his women’s team will have ——————— to settle for the Swimming first two. ■■■■■■■■■■■■MB But that doesn’t have him worried as both the men’s and women’s teams begin their fall seasons today at the Southwest Conference Relays held at the University of Arkansas. Thirteen of the 15 women on the team are freshmen, and the two “old pros” — Rachel Benzel and Suzanne Fiori — are just sophomores. “Rachel and Suzanne are really providing the needed leadership for this team,” Nash said. “They’ve been performing well in workouts and will be the mainstays of the team.” But Nash said he’s expecting good things from such new’ recruits as Ste phanie Langham, Susan Habermas, Michelle Chow and Courtney Searcy. “It’s so tough to single out anyone in this group,” he saiof. “The ones I’ve named are those who will probably swim more events. “But we’re an incredibly well-bal anced team. It’s just like two years ago — our depth will be phenome nal. Out of our 15, virtually any sin gle one can score points for you in a meet. Three-fourths of the team can make the finals at conference.” The A&rM women’s team sur prised the other teams and Nash when it finished second to the Uni versity of Texas last year at the Re lays. Setter Yvonne Van Brandt pulled out 11 digs and had 28 assists. “Statistically we looked very good,” A&M Coach A1 Givens said, “but we had 16 service errors and that’s too many. The win moves the 18th-ranked Aggies’ record to 19-6 on the season. Offensively, the Aggies hit .335 as a team against the Lady Cardinals. Sophomore Cheri Steensma led the Aggies in kills with 18 for a .515 hit ting percentage, while redshirt freshman Kelli Kellen had a .625 av erage and added 11 kills. “We played in spurts again. We had determined early in the match that we would win and we played down to their level. It’s a win, though, and we’ll take it, but we’ll have to play tougher against Ken tucky (tonight’s match).” The Aggies play Eastern Ken tucky on Saturday. 40% OFF #e AI though the AfkMiwi missing an essential reason for its ishec 1 second to Texas ai past si iccess — All- American hut- Rda ^ last year, Nad terflyei Chris O’Neil. toug It time trying to re “It’s going to be a 1 little bit rough," year the Relays added di- Nash s; nd. “Over the last four years, comi petition (the Aggie; O’Neil was a big reas on we were sue- divers), and thief cessful in the Relays. won' tlx-able to compete.' w fN ( in the rii, vs no ivs ice 100-meier t nmsnrci second tuuerfly ai ihc N; ash said he likes vY NCAA Championshi ips and won the in hi is swimmers and kol event at the Goods vill Games this to th ( u pcorningvcar. sum me rr, is a studem t assistant coach hey*re all maturcansl for the team.
