John McKnight of Syd ney, Australia, ran up against a wall of official silence during his seven- ! Ay quest for information about Mor- dechai Vanunu, a former nuclear ] technician. ■ He told reporters before flying out that he was “disappointed, but con vinced that Mordi (Vanunu’s nick name) is here.” He thinks Israeli agents brought Vanunu to Israel fft'in Britain and that he is in jail fac ing trial on treason charges. ||Isradi officials have dodiutt^i.pub lic comment on the case. Many details about the case have been censored in Israel. The priest spent a week in Israel, speaking to Vanunu’s family and the news media, and trying hard to talk to Israeli officials. No one in the govern ment would meet with him, he said. Vanunu, 32, disappeared from London four weeks ago, shortly after he sold photographs and informa- tion about a subterranean atomic arms factory in southern Israel to the Sunday Times of London. Vanunu, who said he smuggled in his camera, worked at the factory for 10 years before being dismissed last spring as part of a cost-cutting drive. His interviews with the newspaper prompted the.most extensive report ever about Israel’s nuclear capacity. The Sunday limes reported that Israel already has built 100 atomic bombs at the factory in Dimona and is the world’s sixth largest nuclear power. Officials in Israel have said the Jewish state will not introduce nuc lear weapons into the Middle East, but also that it will not be the second Middle East country to use them. McKnight said he met Vanunu six months ago when the Israeli dropped into his King’s Cross parish. In June, McKnight converted Vanunu to Christianity. He said Vanunu went to London to tell the Sunday Times his story, four weeks before he dis appeared. Then “he went into hiding in London, changing hotels seven times,” McKnight said.
