LITTLE ROCK (AP) — A couple
of days before the Houston game,
Arkansas cornerback Charles Wash
ington was passing by the office of
defensive coordinator Fred Golds

“We’ve got a big game coming up
against Houston,” Goldsmith told
Washington. “You need to get an in
terception to keep up with the one
from last year.”
Washington, a fifth-year senior,
reminded Goldsmith that he had
made an interception in each of his
three appearances against the Cou
gars. On Saturday night, in the As
trodome, he picked off two more
passes and Goldsmith said, “Well, it
looks like you went over your limit.”
Washington’s first interception
came with 35 seconds left in the half.
Less than two minutes earlier, Ar
kansas broke a 6-6 tie on Marshall
Foreman's 19-yard run. Washing
ton’s 32-yard return to the Houston
35 set up Kendall Trainer’s 51-yard
field goal and a 16-6 lead.
In the fourth quarter, he picked
off a pass to set up the final touch
down in a 30-13 victory.

IRVING (AP) — Tex Schramm
raised his fist in triumph when the
Dallas Cowboys traded up to take
wide receiver Mike Sherrard in the
first round of the NFL draft.
“It’s about time we finally did
something right,” Schramm said,
who had been unhappy with the
Cowboys’ first-round mistakes the
previous five years.
The Cowboys haven’t been sorry a
second since they took the speedy
Sherrard, a rookie from UCLA who
specializes in sensational catches.
“He gives something to our of
fense we’ve never had before,” quar
terback Danny White said. “He’s so
fast it’s hard to lead him enough.
And he has great hands. He makes
the routine catches and he makes the
great catches. It’s impossible to over
throw him, and believe me I’ve
tried.”
Sherrard missed the first five
weeks of training camp in a contract
dispute, but the Cowboys knew what
he could do because of his extensive
work at Valley Ranch in the off-sea
son.
“He’ll open up our offense," Dal
las coach Tom Landry said. "He’ll
take some of the double coverage off
Tony Hill.”
Sherrard still isn’t being double-
teamed by most clubs although he
has caught touchdown passes of 22,
27, 36 and 39 yards.
“Teams don’t give me a lot of re
spect deep and it’s kind of funny be
cause that’s all I do is go deep,” Sher
rard said. “They kind of dare me to
go deep.”
Going deep, Sherrard caught five
passes for 1 11 yards in a 37-6 victory
over the St. Louis Cardinals.
“Mike can go deep and it helps
loosen up the defense if we can
throw to nim four or five times dur
ing a game,” Dallas offensive coordi
nator Paul Hackett said. “And he has
great hands besides great speed.”
The 6-foot-2, lo5-pound Sher
rard has excellent speed lines.
His mother, Cherrie, was a mem
ber of the 1964 U.S. Olympic team
as an 80-meter hurdler. I hat was

guard Myron Jackson has made
the Dallas Mavericks’ 12-man
squad, the NBA team announced
Tuesday.
