This movie has received mixed re views. Rated R. "Ran" An overpowering version of Shakespeare’s “King Lear" from Japanese director Akira Kurosawa, the man who gave us “Seven Samurai,” “Rasho- mon” and “Kagemusha." The film is back in town for a limited engagement, so make sure you get out to see it soon. Rated R. "Soul Man" C. Thomas Howell and Rae Dawn Chong in a comedy about a white guy who be comes black to get a minority scholarship to Harvard Law School. Starts today. Rated PG- 13. "Deadly Friend" Another horror film from Wes Craven, the director of “A Nightmare on Elm Street. ” See review on page 5. Rated R. "Peggy Sue Got Married" Kathleen Turner and Nicholas Cage star in Francis Coppola’s fantasy about a woman who gets a chance to go back in time to high school. This marvelous film is not a “Back to the Futu re” rip-off, but an intelligent and touching story of a woman re examining her life. Rated PG- 13. "The Boy Who Could Fly" Scott J. Underwood, Lucy Dea- kains, Bonnie Bedelia in a fan tasy film about a girl and a boy with a strange power. Rated PG. PLAZA 3 226 Southwest Parkway 693-2457 ^'Crocodile Dundee" Australian comedian Paul Ho gan is the famous trapper Mi chael J. “Crocodile” Dundee who is brought back to America by a reporter (Linda Kozlowski). Hogan brings an Australian flavor to the New York streets and falls in love with Kozlowski. A bit predicta ble, but lots of fun. Rated PG. "The Color of Money" Martin Scorsese’s new film about a pool hustler and his manager. Paul Newman and Tom Cruise star. Starts today. Rated R. "Children of a Lesser God" William Hurt, Marlee Matlin and Piper Laurie star in this filmed version of Mark Medoff s play. Hurt is teacher at a school for the deaf. Matlin is a deaf woman who works at the school. They fall in love but have to overcome the barrier of silence between them. Hurt de serves an Oscar for his perfor mance in this superb film. Rated R. "Tough Guys" Burt Lancaster and Kirk Doug las are two criminals who are re leased from prison after 30 years. They get tired of trying to be ordinary senior citizens and decide to steal the same train they were sent up the river for robbing 30 years before. Lan caster and Douglas are excel lent and are almost able to pull the film out the stock cliches about old folks. Charles Durn- ing is also pretty good as the sheriff who caught Lancaster and Douglas the first time and who is out to get them again. The actors are better than the screenplay they are stuck with. Rated PG. "Blue Velvet" A new film from director David Lynch, the man who gave us “Eraserhead” and “The El ephant Man.” The film has re ceived mixed reviews, but promises to be interesting. Starts today. Rated R. "Trick or Treat" Starts today. Rated R. SCHULMAN 6 2002 E. 29th 775-2463 "Top Gun" Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis in a long commercial for the U.S. Armed Forces with a love story thrown in for good mea sure. The cinematography is great, especially if you like flying sequences. This movie has some of the best. Rated PG. "Ruthless People" Bette Midler and Danny DeVito in an updated version of an 0. Henry story. A couple of kid nappers make off with DeVito’s wife (Midler), only to find that DeVito doesn’t want her back, no matter what the price. Rated R. "Stand By Me" Director Rob Reiner’s version of Stephen King’s novella “The Body. ” This isn’t another horror flick, but a warm look at friendship, good times and growing up. One of the best screen adaptations of a King novel. Rated R. "Back to School" Rodney Dangerfield in a com edy about an old guy who be comes big man on campus. Rated R. "Code Name Wild Geese" A Rambo-esque film about a bunch of mercenaries. Don’t bother. Rated R. "Aliens" Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and a troop of Space Marines go to a strange planet to fight off car nivorous aliens in a science fic tion thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat. This se quel is more fun than the origi nal. Rated R. AGGIE CINEMA/ CEPHEID VARIABLE Rudder Theatre Complex 845-1234 Saturday "Out of Africa" Robert Redford and Meryl Streep star in David Lean’s beautiful but long film about a love affair in turn-of-the-century Africa.The film won last year’s Oscar winner for Best Film. Rated PG. Saturday Midnight "The Wall" Director Alan Parker brings Pink Royd’s classic album to the screen. Bob Geldof of the Boomtown Rats portrays Pink, an alienated rock star who has been left alone after a long struggle with family, school, drugs, fans and his wife. There are several harrowing scenes that show the power a rock star has over his audience. Gerald Scarfe’s animation gives the film a surrealistic feel. Probably the best blend of music and story ever filmed. Rated R. Tuesday "Kagemusha" An epic film about a Japanese warlord trying to unify his entire nation. Director Akira Kuro sawa, the man who gave us “Seven Samurai,” “Rasho- mon” and “Ran,” is at his usual best with a film so powerful that it will knock your socks off. Rated PG. Wednesday "Gaslight" Charles Boyer tries to make his wife, Ingrid Bergman, believe that she is insane by turning down the lights and hiding her posessions. Joseph Cotton is the detective who learns of Boyer’s sinster plans for his wife. A great film from director George Cukor that asks several questions about the nature of insanity. Rated PG. Wednesday "An American Werewolf in London" David Naughton and Griffin Dunne are two college students hiking across England. When they are attacked by a were wolf, Dunne is killed but Naughton is cursed to become a werewolf each time the moon is full. Jenny Agutter is the nurse who takes care of Naugh ton during the day while he goes out and kills people during the night. An interesting blend of horror and comedy from di rector John Landis.
