Kelly Mad den led the Aggies last week with a time of 17 minutes, 28 seconds to fi|ish in ninth place. The men will compete in a five- mile race at 5:30 p.m. in the hope of outdistancing Southwest Conference opponents Southern Methodist, Houston and Baylor. The men also had a successful weekend at the UTSA meet where they finished third overall. Sophomore Calvin Ga- ziano paced the team with a personal best of 25:01 to finish in fifth place. A&M Cross Country Coach Steve Silvey said both teams are ready for a very competitive meet. “All of our runners, both men and women, had their personal bests of the fall at the UTSA meet,” Silvey said. Silvey also said his No. 3 runner on the men’s team, Joel Toland, should be ready to run after strain ing a hamstring earlier this season. With Toland, the Aggies will be able to start their top seven runners to gether for the first time this season. The meet is scheduled to be held at the A&M Golf Course, but could be moved to the Polo grounds due to the wet weather. (AP)—Quar terback Doug Flutie was no sooner introduced to the Chicago Bears Wednesday when Coach Mike Ditka announced that Jim McMahon would start at quarterback Sunday against the Detroit Lions. “Jim threw and he threw well,” Ditka said. “He did everything that was asked of him. He threw more than he has in a long time.” Ditka said it was McMahon’s ach ing back and not his shoulder injury that kept him out of the 23-7 loss at Minnesota last Sunday, the Bears’ first. McMahon had missed three of the first seven games because of a va riety of injuries but he apparently has recovered. “I said to the players T’d like to in troduce Doug Flutie,’ ” Ditka said. What did they say? “A couple of them threw tomatoes at me,” Ditka joked. “But I think a couple of them invited him to din ner.” Ditka bristled when he was asked what he saw in Flutie that intrigued him. “I’m going to answer that question for the last time,” Ditka snapped. “I like 10,579 yards. He took his team to three bowl games, he won the Heisman. He didn’t do it by mirrors, he did it throwing.” McMahon, who was most vocal against the Bears acquiring Flutie, was not available for comment after the practice and refused to talk to re porters earlier. Flutie said he hadn’t met all the players yet “but one by one they came up and introduced themselves. It was a good greeting, they eased me in. Yes,T met McMahon. Flutie, who hasn’t played football since the spring of 1985 when he was with the New Jersey Generals of the dormant United States Football League, appeared pleased to be back in uniform. “The football environment feels great,” Flutie said. “I missed it.” Flutie also talked to the other Chi cago quarterbacks, Steve Fuller and Mike Tomczak. “Mike and I know each other, we were in the Japan Bowl together,” Flutie said. “I talked to him more than anybody else.” Fantastic Sam’s 4001 E. 29th Stret Bryan, Texas 268-8676 Fantastic Sam’s 2406-A Texas Ave S.
