Houston, 1-6, had taken the lead ust 43 seconds earlier when line- packer Robert Lyles picked up a fumble and ran 93 yards untouched for a touchdown and a 28-24 lead. ■The 5-2 Bengals furiously cov ered 70 yards in five plays, capped by Brooks’ second touchdown run of the game. Brooks led the Bengals of fense with 133 yards on 18 carries and 62 yards on six catches. jThe 1-6 Oilers suffered their sixth nsecutive loss, extending their treak of futility against Cincinnati. The Oilers have lost their last six mes at Riverfront Stadium since 980 and have dropped 10 of their last 11 games to the Bengals. ■The Bengals, 5-2, took sole pos session of first place in the AFC Cen tral Division with its best start since 1982, the last time they went to the playoffs with a 7-2 record in the strike-shortened season. II The Oilers appeared to have pulled a stunning reversal in the closing minutes, before quarterback Boomer Esiason rallied Cincinnati against the top-ranked defense in the American Conference. |Cincinnati was leading 24-21 and poised to run out the clock on the Oiler 5-yard line after Houston used its last time out. Fullback Larry Kinnebrew took a hand-off, ran into the middle of the Oiler line and fumbled. The ball went to Lyles, who was laying on the ground. The replay confirmed he picked the ball up without being touched before sprinting for the Oil ers’ first lead of the game with 1:26 to play. Esiason hit Cris Collinsworth with a 25-yard pass to start the Bengals’ winning drive. He completed 13 of 25 passes for 192 yards in the game.
